Embedded Systems Engineer - Scientific Instrumentation

About Forsta Varme

Forsta Varme Technologies is an engineering data startup that develops scientific instruments and supporting physics models and simulation tools for characterizing the thermal behaviour of materials, interfaces, and engineered systems.

We are seeking an Embedded Systems Engineer to take technical ownership of the electronics and firmware within our scientific measurement platforms. You will work with PhD scientists, mechanical engineers, software developers, and a junior electronics engineer to turn experimental requirements and existing prototypes into reliable, maintainable instruments.

The Role

This position is responsible for the embedded architecture and technical implementation of our instruments. You will design electronics, develop firmware, integrate sensors and mechanical actuation, troubleshoot system-level problems, and work within our established engineering practices required to make changes without compromising existing functionality.

The successful candidate will be able to understand why an instrument is being built, translate experimental needs into technical requirements, and work with leadership to guide development from prototype through validated operation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own the embedded hardware and firmware architecture of scientific instruments.
  • Develop firmware in Embedded C and supporting test or automation software in Python.
  • Design and review schematics and printed circuit boards.
  • Integrate precision temperature, force, displacement, thickness, and position sensors.
  • Control motors, actuators, heaters, relays, and other electromechanical hardware.
  • Define interfaces between firmware, electronics, mechanical systems, and application software.
  • Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of instrument failures.
  • Review technical work and provide direction to a junior electronics engineer.
  • Document design decisions, interfaces, risks, test results, and release requirements.
  • Communicate progress, uncertainties, and technical trade-offs clearly across the engineering team.
Experience
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Approximately four or more years of relevant experience developing embedded hardware, firmware, instrumentation, automation systems, robotics, or electromechanical products.
  • Strong proficiency in Embedded C and experience with Python.
  • Experience with microcontrollers, embedded communications, PCB design, sensor integration, and hardware debugging.
  • Experience developing systems that combine electronics, firmware, sensors, actuators, and higher-level software.
  • Strong understanding of circuit analysis, signal integrity, analog and digital measurement, and practical troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated experience taking a system from a working prototype to a reliable and maintainable product.
  • Ability to make and explain sound engineering decisions based on system requirements, failure modes, and downstream impacts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with scientific instrumentation, precision measurement, FreeRTOS, temperature control, motor control, data acquisition, or hardware-in-the-loop testing would be an asset.
