Law Clerk Positions Available:
September 2026 to August 2027 Term
The Law Clerk Program is similar to a judicial clerkship: it is a yearlong position designed for recent law school graduates or those who have recently completed judicial clerkships who have a sincere interest in becoming assistant prosecutors. The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office typically hires several full-time law clerks each term. The term of service is one year, usually commencing in early September and ending the following August.
On occasion, depending on the needs of the Office, other starting dates may be available.
The law clerks are assigned to the Appellate Section of the Office where they work under the supervision of seasoned assistant prosecutors. Daily responsibilities include preparation of responses to trial court motions and petitions for post-conviction relief, appeals, and a myriad of other projects. The clerks are also responsible for municipal appeals, including oral argument on the appeal before the assigned judge.
The Law Clerk Program provides exposure to a wide variety of interesting and challenging legal issues, giving new attorneys a unique opportunity to gain experience in the field of criminal law. Many of our former law clerks have used this training to further their careers as assistant prosecutors in our Office, county prosecutor’s offices throughout the state, or as members of the criminal defense bar.
Requirements:Prior to appointment, all selected candidates must have successfully obtained a Juris Doctorate at an American Bar Association accredited law school. All selected candidates must also either be admitted to the New Jersey Bar or be scheduled to take the Uniform Bar Examination no later than July 2026.
Benefits:Law clerks are full-time county employees and, therefore, are entitled to a range of benefits including health insurance, prescription plan, dental plan, and enrollment in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Additionally, law clerks receive 12 vacation days, 12 sick days, and three personal days.
Special Note:An offer of employment with the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office is conditioned upon successfully passing a pre-employment drug screening and a comprehensive background investigation.
Application Procedures:Candidates seeking consideration for the September 2026 to August 2027 term, should submit a cover letter, resume, writing sample and law school transcript to:
