- POSITION TITLE: Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician:
Basic, Advance, or Paramedic [Part-Time] - DEPARTMENT: Fire/EMS
- RATE CLASS: Part-Time, Temporary
- REPORTS TO: Command Officer or Company Officer, including Chief, Deputy Chief(s), Captain, Lieutenant
- SHIFT: Flexible hours assigned to maintain minimum staffing; shifts in 12-hour or 24-hour increments. Total hours not guaranteed. Hours paid per FLSA. Hours may be altered at the City Manager, Fire Chief, or designee’s discretion. Essential personnel.
- EDUCATION: High School diploma or GED;
Texas DPS Certification as EMT or higher;
Texas CFPE certification as Basic Structural Firefighter; valid Texas Driver License with Class B endorsement within 90 days of hire (if applicable). An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
Under the direction of the Command Officer or Company Officer, perform duties and activities of the Freeport Fire & EMS Department in response to fire and medical emergencies. Activities include, but are not limited to, fire suppression, fire prevention, fire inspection, fire investigation, emergency medical services, and emergency management response, as assigned.
Special SkillsKnowledge of modern fire suppression, prevention, inspection, investigation, emergency medical services, and emergency management principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment; knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, procedures, and regulations. Skilled in operating job-specific tools and equipment. Ability to perform physical work, communicate effectively, exercise sound judgment, give and receive instructions, and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Duties & Responsibilities- Indirectly supervise junior Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians, or others as assigned
- May serve as Incident Commander during emergency operations
- Directly and indirectly responsible to ensure the safe actions of employees and volunteer members
- Complete daily assigned station duties
- May evaluate fire, emergency medical, and emergency management operations
- Enforce policies and procedures to implement directives from the Chief
- Implement fire and emergency medical service programs for the city to carry out department policies and goals
- Attend training and meetings as assigned
- May recommend programs or policies to alleviate department deficiencies
- Respond to alarms and operate safely
- Safely operate department apparatus and vehicles
- Perform pump operator duties as assigned
- May inspect buildings for fire hazards and enforce fire prevention ordinances
- May perform departmental in-service training and activities
- Obtain prior approval for expenditures
- Prepare a variety of reports as necessary
- May be asked to evaluate the need for new equipment and supplies
- Meet with the public on all aspects of shift activities, as required or assigned
- May be assigned to perform the duties of a higher classification in their absence
- Stay current with firefighting technique and medical practices
- May be assigned to perform any and all duties as necessary

Physical/Mental RequirementsPhysical: Daily duties include physically strenuous activity; ability to lift, bend, stoop, crawl, stand, and walk for extended periods as required by fire, medical, and emergency management operations.
Mental: Emergency or non-traditional hours; exposure to inclement weather, stressful situations, potentially combative or intoxicated patients, blood borne and airborne pathogens, and scenes of trauma or death. Ability to work under pressure with distractions while maintaining ethical standards.
