EDUCATION
High School Diploma or GED. Must have a valid Texas driver's license, or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire, with a good driving record.
JOB SUMMARYProvide care, custody, and control of persons arrested within the jurisdiction of the Freeport Police Department. Take prisoners before the judge as required. Maintain jail record system and other logs, inventory and maintain prisoners' property. Shift work is required.
ESSENTIAL SKILLSConsiderable knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, departmental SOPs and regulations. Skilled in operation of job‑specific tools and equipment. Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition, communicate effectively orally and in writing, exercise sound judgment, give and receive instructions, establish and maintain working relationships, and meet special requirements listed below.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES- Operate the jail, guard and supervise prisoners, and ensure their safety and security.
- Ascertain that commitments and arrests of prisoners to be maintained in jail for proper order.
- Assure that all prisoners are thoroughly searched before confinement and properly confined.
- Make periodic checks of cells at least once an hour and enforce obedience of all jail rules and regulations.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the cell blocks.
- Operate the jail impartially in handling prisoners.
- Report to superior officer any complaints concerning operation of the jail and any infractions of rules and regulations.
- Maintain adequate books and records pertaining to prisoners retained by the Freeport Police Department.
- Photograph and fingerprint prisoners.
- Log and admit visitors.
- Supervise prisoner work details (trustee).
- Promptly serve meals when prepared.
- Perform related work as directed.
- Conform to the oral and written policies of the Freeport Police Department.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTSPhysical: Ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs., bend, stoop, crawl, stand, and walk for extended periods. Operate, maneuver, and stem equipment and machinery requiring simple adjustments. Coordinate semi‑skilled movements such as data entry. Exert moderate physical effort – climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling. Recognize differences between characteristics of colors, forms, sounds, and odors associated with job‑related objects, materials, and tasks.
Mental: Must manage emergency or non‑traditional hours, work under pressure with numerous distractions while maintaining good ethics and public service skills in adverse circumstances.
All municipal employees will be expected to show and maintain a high level of initiative, enthusiasm, and motivation toward the improvement of all aspects of the Freeport community. Employees must be available for work, report to work reliably, and be physically and mentally fit to do their assigned work.
Must pass a drug analysis test, physical exam, and successfully complete a background check.
