Public Works Maintenance Tech I
Department: Public Works
Rate Class: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Public Works Director
Shift: 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM, M‑F (Non‑standard hours may be required)
Job Summary: Under the direction of the Department Supervisor, provides highly skilled technical assistance to assigned areas of responsibility and performs related work as required.
Responsibilities- Grounds Maintenance – Includes parks, playground areas, public spaces, street medians, landscaping, street trees, trails, and related structures.
- Street Maintenance – Includes street pavement, storm drainage, sidewalk maintenance and repair, pavement legends/striping, public signage, street sweeping, and graffiti abatement.
- Facilities Maintenance – Includes all city owned facilities, trailers, and parking equipment.
Required:

Certifications:
Texas Driver’s License (or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire) and a safe driving record. - Experience: Minimum 2 years of maintenance experience in streets, drainage, parks/grounds, or building maintenance.
Preferred:
- Education: High school diploma or GED.
- Heavy Equipment Operator Certification (preferred).
- Electrical, plumbing, and/or HVAC licenses (preferred).
- Safety training certifications (preferred).
- Provides labor in assigned areas of responsibility.
- Supports daily operations of the Public Works Department.
- Conducts maintenance and repairs using equipment.
- Maintains safe working conditions for the workforce and public.
- Contributes to work‑site actions to ensure safety rules and regulations are followed.
- Reports problems, emergency situations, and unsafe acts to the supervisor.
- Responds to emergency maintenance requests during normal hours and after hours.
- Maintains a cell phone for city use.
- Represents the City professionally in interactions with the public and governmental agencies.
- Collects necessary materials, tools, and equipment before arriving on the job site.
- Works closely with Public Works Management team to provide coordinated service delivery.
- Ensures all equipment and machinery is fueled for emergencies.
- Maintains daily work activity logs.
- Responsible for emergency call‑out.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Completing maintenance work orders.
- Following directions of supervisors.
- Analyzing problems, evaluating alternatives, and making creative recommendations.
- Reading and interpreting plans, specifications, and guidelines.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Maintaining accurate records and preparing clear reports and correspondence.
- Promoting safe work practices.
- Principles, practices, methods, and materials for municipal maintenance projects.
- Street, facility, park, horticulture, and equipment maintenance techniques.
- Safety practices related to the line of work.
- Applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
Physical: Routine physical effort, lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects up to 50 lbs.; frequent walking, standing, crouching, crawling, fine dexterity; operation of heavy and motorized equipment; visual and audible awareness; ability to work in adverse weather.
Mental: Ability to work well with others and the public; multitask, work under time constraints, problem‑solve, prioritize; maintain confidentiality and resolve conflicts; independent judgment.
Additional RequirementsMust pass a drug analysis test, physical examination, and a background check.
