Student Teacher – Religious Education

Job DescriptionThe work of this position helps youth and young adults deepen their conversion to Jesus Christ and His restored gospel, qualify for the blessings of the temple, and prepare themselves, their families, and others for eternal life with their Father in Heaven. This entry‑level intern position is responsible for instructing day‑to‑day seminary religious classes to the youth of the Church, including lesson preparation, effective lesson presentation, testing, grade and attendance recording, parent/student meetings, student counseling/encouragement, school official interface, and local Priesthood Leader interface.
Responsibilities- Accountable for the transfer of gospel knowledge to students in a manner that increases their testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
- Consistently prepare and present lessons that spiritually influence students.
- Prepare effective lessons daily that bring students closer to Christ, expand their gospel knowledge, and build their testimonies.
- Maintain recording of grades and attendance for the students.
- Build bonds with students that encourage their interest in the gospel and give counsel and support to students having spiritual difficulties in their life.
- Meet with students and parents concerning the students’ progress in the class.
- Meet with school officials to coordinate class issues.
- Assist Priesthood leaders in the development of the students’ testimonies, so that the students will serve missions, marry in the temple, and serve in the Church.
- Teach students the doctrines and principles of the gospel as found in the scriptures and the words of the prophets.
- Teach in a way that leads to understanding and edification.
- Use approved curriculum and materials.
- Teach the number of classes recommended by policy in consultation with the Area Director.
- Accept faculty assignments.
- Observe classroom teaching and provide helpful feedback to teachers.
- Strive for continual professional growth.
- Provide useful information and respect the priesthood leader’s time.
- Establish clear and consistent methods of communication.
- Work closely with priesthood leaders in identifying and enrolling all potential students.
- Cultivate a learning environment of love, respect, and purpose in your classroom.
Preservice students are expected to work the time necessary to accomplish their assigned teaching and administrative responsibilities.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an approved and accredited institution of higher learning.
- Be a worthy and active member of the Church and hold a current temple recommend.
- Exhibit a testimony of the Savior and His restored gospel.
- Exemplify Church teachings regarding marriage and family life.
- Have and maintain a reputation of meeting financial commitments.
- Relate to and be able to manage a classroom of youths and young single adults/young adults.
- Demonstrate outstanding scripture‑teaching skills both face‑to‑face and online.
- Must have taught or currently be teaching a Seminary or Institute class as a volunteer teacher.
- Must be able to apply sensitivity and diplomacy in teaching students.
- Know and apply educational theory and technique; psychology of youth learning in a religious context; S&I policies and material.
- Aligned with the direction and policies of the Church Board of Education and S&I leadership.
- Must be able to use standard office equipment.
- To successfully perform the essential functions of the job this position frequently communicates with students who have inquiries on various topics; the person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the classroom.
- Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
