Overview
The Public Works Department is recruiting a Senior Construction Inspector to oversee public works street, highway, bridge, park, and related construction projects for compliance with plans and specifications.
Responsibilities- Review construction plans, specifications, encroachment permits, and other documents affecting assigned projects.
- Meet and discuss construction details and problems with contractors and other agencies.
- Conduct inspections of construction materials, grade elevation, underground facilities, construction safety precautions, concrete structures, street light installations, traffic signal installations, traffic control devices, and erosion and siltation control installations to determine compliance with contract plans and specifications and city regulations.
- Make field measurements of quantities in place and prepare and monitor the correction of project deficiencies.
- Coordinate materials testing and construction survey activities and identify and recommend the approval of necessary contract and/or design adjustments to accommodate field conditions.
- Approve field adjustments, evaluate work in progress for compliance with safety standards, stop or reject construction work, and maintain daily diary and field records of materials and quantities used.
- Calculate and recommend formal approval of appropriate progress payments to contractors for work completed and investigate citizen complaints related to encroachment or grading violations.
- Lead the work of other Inspectors and perform field or office work related to construction inspection duties.
- High school graduation and six (6) years experience in street/highway construction and training in a related field to the inspection of construction (public works project surveying, materials testing, and/or paving), including at least two (2) years’ experience performing duties of a construction inspector.
- Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License.
- Knowledge of accepted industry standards, terminology, construction practices for public works projects, surveying and staking practices, soils and construction materials characteristics, construction safety standards, Cal Trans Traffic Control Devices Manual, Cal Trans standard specifications, blueprint reading, report writing, and traffic safety.
- Skill in operating surveying equipment, preparing field sketches, and driving a vehicle on paved and unpaved surfaces.
- Physical capacity to work under the conditions described, including ability to lift up to 10 lbs. occasionally, 11‑25 lbs. rare, and 26‑50 lbs. rare, and to stand, walk, and bend frequently.
Work indoors and outdoors, exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures, working at unprotected heights, exposure to dust, fumes, smoke, and other irritating particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, and exposure to excessive noise or vibration. Required eye‑hand, eye‑hand‑foot, driving, acuity, and field of vision.
