The Department

The Engineering Division delivers public infrastructure projects such as streets, storm drains, and City buildings. The team plans, reviews, designs, surveys, acquires property, manages construction, and provides inspection services. These projects are carried out through the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and private development.

The Ideal Candidate

The City is seeking a self‑motivated individual who is knowledgeable in engineering terminology and demonstrates a strong commitment to providing exceptional customer service. The ideal candidate should be comfortable engaging with residents, developers, and other stakeholders – responding to inquiries, explaining processes clearly, and helping customers with professionalism, patience, and a service‑oriented approach. The ideal candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

A successful candidate may also possess a working knowledge of the private land development process and be able to assist staff engineers in reviewing public and private street improvement plans, encroachment permit plans, and grading and drainage plans.

This is a deep class series which includes Engineering Technician I and Engineering Technician II.

Definition

Under supervision, Engineering Technicians may work in any Engineering division including Design, Construction, Development, Transportation and Survey;
Technicians perform a variety of work to assist with the design and construction management of public works projects; may assist as needed with the survey crew; perform related duties as assigned.

Class Characteristics

These classifications represent the entry and second level in the technical engineering classification series; employees may advance from Engineering Technician I to Engineering Technician II based on departmental operational need and assessment of the employee's skill level. The position will report to an Engineering section head.

Essential Functions General Duties for both the Technician I and II in all assignments
  • Operates a variety of office machines, calculators, personal computers and a variety of software applications.
  • Makes initial review of project submittals and RFIs and routes correctly.
  • Under the direction of a registered engineer, prepares manually or through CAD diagrams for field design changes.
