About the position:The Sr. Process Engineer will provide technical leadership to build and operate the process capability for a new Copper Clad Laminate (CCL) research and development program. This hands-on role owns small-scale equipment, hot-press and lamination process development, the CCL process laboratory, integrated process development, automation, process specifications, and transfer toward larger-scale operation. The engineer will convert material and interface concepts into repeatable processes and will work with the analytical and reliability engineer to correlate process conditions with signal loss, physical performance, and reliability.
The ideal candidate combines strong process-engineering fundamentals with deep hands-on hot-press experience, equipment expertise, laboratory discipline, automation capability, and practical problem solving.
- Source, evaluate, specify, and commission small-scale equipment - including laboratory hot presses, associated tooling, and auxiliary systems - needed to establish flexible CCL process-development capability.
- Modify and integrate commercial or custom equipment when needed, including fixtures, material handling, controls, sensors, data acquisition, ventilation, guarding, and safety interlocks.
- Set up and manage the CCL process laboratory, including equipment layout, utilities, EHS controls, SOPs, training, preventive maintenance, calibration, material flow, and daily operational readiness.
- Develop and integrate the end-to-end CCL process from incoming materials through finished research samples, with direct ownership of hot-press and lamination operations, while protecting confidential process details and research direction.
- Translate particle-treatment and material concepts from the material scientist into repeatable, scalable, and increasingly automated chemical-processing workflows.
- Develop and optimize hot-press tooling and platen configuration; pressure-temperature-time profiles; heating and cooling rates; material flow and consolidation; thickness and pressure uniformity; defect control; cycle repeatability; and safe operation. Establish critical process parameters, operating windows, process specifications, control plans, sampling requirements, and acceptance criteria for individual operations and the integrated process.
- Design and execute DOE to determine how equipment settings and process conditions affect uniformity, defects, signal loss, mechanical and thermal behavior, and reliability.
- Develop process monitoring, automation, and data-collection methods that improve control, repeatability, traceability, throughput, and efficient learning.
- Own equipment and process troubleshooting, support cross-functional root cause analysis, and implement process corrective and preventive actions; improve safety, yield, repeatability, capability, and transferability toward larger scale.
- Provide technical guidance to project team members; document equipment and process requirements, experimental results, and specifications; collaborate with the Director, material scientist, analytical and reliability engineer, suppliers, facilities, and EHS.
- M.S. or PhD in Chemical, Mechanical, Materials, or Polymer Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field; typically 7+ years of relevant industrial process-development or equipment-engineering experience.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience developing and operating hot-press, compression-molding, or lamination processes is required, including press setup, tooling, pressure-temperature-time profiles, heating and cooling control, uniformity, defect reduction, and cycle…
