Job Title: Respiratory Care Practitioner RCP II
Job Code: 2RC
Salary Range: $62.39 to $79.63 plus applicable per diem differential
Job SummaryAdministers routine and advanced respiratory therapy procedures to patients of all ages across all hospital units, as prescribed by a physician and under the direction of the Director or Shift Leader. Performs other related duties as assigned, including EKG. May also be assigned additional duties as required.
Required Qualifications- Education:
- High‑school graduate or equivalent.
- Associate Degree from a recognized JRCTE/AMA‑approved two‑year Respiratory Therapy program.
- Licensure: Valid California Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) License issued by the Respiratory Care Board of the State of California.
- Certifications:
- Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association (AHA).
- Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – AHA, within 12 months of implementation of the Respiratory Care Professional Development Career Ladder.
- Valid Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – AHA, within 12 months of implementation of the Career Ladder (not required for those working exclusively in Pulmonary Rehab/PFT units).
- Valid Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – AHA/AAP, within 60 days of hire or 12 months of implementation of the Career Ladder (not required for those working exclusively in Pulmonary Rehab/PFT units).
- Actively credentialed as a “Registered Respiratory Therapist” by the National Board of Respiratory Care or five years of recent experience as a Respiratory Care Practitioner at WHHS.
- Work Experience for Respiratory Care Dept:
- Meets all RCP I requirements.
- Completed 1,000 hours of acute care experience.
- NICU/II or assists with Therapeutic Bronchoscopy.
- ICU/IMC, ED/Trauma, Med/Surg Units, Onc/Tele/Neuro/Ortho units, Pediatrics.
- Advanced Care—including intubation assist, artificial airway management, ventilator management, critical care transports.
- Proficient in respiratory‑driven protocols and strategies (e.g., Flolan therapy, ICU ventilator management/Weaning protocols, Bronchodilator protocol, Pediatric Asthma protocol, Lung Protection Strategies—ARDSnet).
- Mentor and orient new Respiratory Care Practitioners.
- Performs other related duties as assigned, including EKG.
- Work Experience for Pulmonary Rehab/PFT Dept:
- Meets all RCP I requirements.
- Completed 1,000 hours in either Pulmonary Rehab program or Pulmonary Function Testing at WHHS.
- Technical Knowledge:
- Classifies patients based on stability levels.
- Understanding of normal and abnormal respiratory physiology.
- Knowledge of indications, appropriateness, contraindications, and side effects of medications and treatment techniques.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to organize work, set priorities and perform detailed work.
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory or related health sciences/healthcare.
- Work Experience: One to two years of experience in an acute care setting or Pulmonary Rehab program.
- Administers routine respiratory therapy procedures to patients of all ages, including but not limited to General Floors (Med/Surg/Tele/Ortho/Oncology/Neuro), Pediatrics, ER/Trauma, ICU, and IMC, as prescribed by a physician and under the Director or Shift Leader.
- Displays competency, knowledge and proficiency with ventilator patients, ABG’s, BIPAP and bedside spirometry.
- Assists patients with education and health promotion.
- Performs other related duties as assigned, including EKG.
- Administers care for all phases of the Pulmonary Rehab program, including validation of patient acceptance, obtaining orders for entry, obtaining pre‑authorizations, submitting charges, completing registration forms.
- Creates Individual Treatment Plans (ITP’s), conducts exercise programs, education sessions.
- Supports and assists with WHHS’s Better Breather’s Support Group.
- Develops home discharge plans and discharge summaries while maintaining AACVPR standards.
