Emergency Dispatcher – City of Fremont
Base pay range$24.41/hr – $34.35/hr
Position overviewThis role involves responsible communications work in the operation of a public safety radio system, multi‑line 911 telephone system, and associated equipment. The dispatcher receives and transmits radio, telephone, and computer messages, dispenses police, fire, and rescue units, and disseminates emergency and law‑enforcement information on assigned shifts. Work includes record‑keeping, performance reviews, and adherence to policies and procedures.
Shift requirementsWork rotating 12‑hour shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays—including every other weekend and either three or four 12‑hour shifts per week. May be required to work extended shifts or emergency call‑outs.
Essential functions- Monitors, receives calls, and broadcasts on multiple radio frequencies; dispatches units according to SOP; tracks responder locations.
- Provides pre‑arrival medical instruction based on prescribed protocols.
- Receives fire and burglar alarms; maintains records of radio transmissions and telephone calls.
- Supports requests for information from fire, law‑enforcement, criminal justice, and other authorized persons countywide.
- Uses computer terminal to access and retrieve motor‑vehicle, driver‑license, criminal history, stolen‑vehicle, warrant and similar data; transmits information via radio or telephone.
- Maintains and validates county warrant files and protection orders.
- Co‑ordinates prisoner transports.
- Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Types and files documents, prepares statistical reports.
- Serves as information desk; explains court processes and city ordinances to citizens.
- Performs other work consistent with essential functions.
- Principles and practices of radio communications and emergency dispatching.
- Operations of Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD).
- Local geography and key landmarks in the city, county, and adjacent areas.
- Firefighting apparatus and police unit types and staffing.
- Ability to obtain accurate information from distressed callers.
- Rapid and accurate operation of radio and telephone equipment.
- Clear, concise, well‑modulated voice and good diction.
- Simultaneous data entry while speaking.
- Accuracy and composure under pressure; quick, calm, accurate action.
- Ability to establish effective relationships with co‑workers, citizens, emergency responders, and supervisors.
- Computers and office‑machine proficiency with alphanumeric keyboards.
High‑school graduation or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required certifications and licenses- NCIC certification.
- Valid Nebraska driver’s license when operating a vehicle.
- Emergency Medical Dispatch protocols certification.
- Current CPR certification.
