SummaryThis position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.
Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
BasicRequirements
- United States Citizenship:
Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. - Doctor of Medicine (MD) or a comparable degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
- Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Residency may be ACGME or AOA accredited, or other eligible programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified U.S. practice as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
- Residents enrolled in accredited ACGME/AOA programs who meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must hold a full license, may be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis, and will operate under supervision.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Board certification in the related specialty, when required.
- Physical requirements:
meet specified physical standards, pass a physical examination prior to placement, and comply with drug‑testing policies. The role may require lifting 15–44 pounds, pushing, reaching above shoulder level, using both hands, walking and standing for 3–5 hours, and other physical tasks listed in the original posting.
- Oversee day‑to‑day clinical operations of the Emergency Department.
- Manage scheduling and hiring for the EM section to ensure appropriate clinical staffing.
- Engage with other clinical section, service, and nursing leaders to ensure provision of high‑quality emergency care.
- Partner with other VACCHS departments to ensure the availability, quality, and effective use of diagnostic, therapeutic, and mental health services.
- Collaborate with local partners within the Fresno County EMS system as the representative of the VACCHS Emergency Medicine section.
- Maintain faculty appointment with the UCSF Department of Medicine.
- Promote the EM section and VACCHS Medical Service mission to serve as a leader in medical education.
- Provide mentorship and professional support to members of the EM section.
- Other duties as assigned.

PayBase pay range: $‑$ per year.
