The Department of Philosophy offers students the following opportunities for a rich and rewarding undergraduate experience: a general Philosophy Major, a Pre‑Law Option, and a Religious Studies Option, as well as minors in Philosophy, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Middle East Studies.
The immediate need is for up to four class sections (3 units each = 12 units). This is a temporary position for Fall 2025. The department offers courses in Contemporary Moral Conflicts, Moral Questions, 19th Century Philosophy, 20th Century Philosophy, Philosophy of Race, Feminist Philosophy, Philosophy of Law, and other courses. The department seeks qualified candidate(s) to teach undergraduate courses such as:
- Phil 25:
Methods of Reasoning (Principles and methods of good reasoning. Typical topics: identification of argument structure, development of skills in deductive and inductive reasoning, assessing observations and testimony reports, language and reasoning, common fallacies.) - Phil 150:
Foundations of Knowledge (Nature, sources, and limits of human knowledge; roles of perception, reason, testimony, and intuition in acquiring rational beliefs; e.g. science, mathematics, values, the arts, religion, social issues, and psychological states.) - Phil 125W:
Issues in Political Philosophy (Examination of prominent political philosophies and contemporary issues of politics and public policy. Policy issues may include the scope and limits of government authority, the role of government in the economy, foreign policy, health care, education, agriculture, and the environment. Meets the upper‑division writing skills requirement for graduation.)
Temporary faculty members are responsible for adherence to and implementation of university and system‑wide policies as directed per Academic Policy Manual 306, paragraph
2. Instructors are responsible for the preparation, delivery, conducting, proctoring, and grading (as appropriate) of lectures, office hours, homework assignments, quizzes, class projects, and midterm and final exams. All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (i.e., asynchronous, synchronous, in‑person, or hybrid).
Please be advised that an appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the “Order of Work,” or the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure‑line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.
Appointees will be required to demonstrate eligibility to work in the United States (Fresno State is not a sponsoring agency for Temporary Faculty positions).
CompensationCommensurate by qualifications and experience within salary range placement. The salary ranges are established by the CSU Salary Schedule (Class Code = 2358 for Academic Year Lecturers).
The salary range for Temporary Faculty with a Master’s degree is $5,507-6,677 per month when teaching full time (15 WTUs). Starting salaries are usually at or near the minimum of the range. Actual monthly salary will be adjusted based on the number of WTUs assigned per an academic term.
