SummaryUnder the direction of the lead Plumber assembles, installs, and repairs pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Studies building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installations.
- Inspects structure to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structure resulting from installation of pipe.
- Locates and marks position of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors.
- Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings.
- Cuts and threads pipe.
- Bends pipe to required angle by use of pipe‑bending machine or by placing pipe over block and bending it by hand.
- Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals, such as iron, steel, brass, and lead, and nonmetals, such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic.
- Joins pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and caulks joints.
- Fills pipe system with water or air and reads pressure gauges to determine whether system is leaking.
- Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners.
- Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains.
- Welds holding fixtures to steel structural members.
- Performs other routine duties.

Education and/or ExperienceOne-to-two-year certificate from college or technical school; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language SkillsAbility to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence in English. Ability to effectively present information in one-on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization in English.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer SkillsTo perform this job successfully, an individual should be able to navigate a smart phone or tablet for various web-based applications.
Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsAll Plumbers must hold a current driver's license.
