Sanitation Operator

under general supervision, sanitation operators provide customers with convenient, cost-effective collection services for green waste, refuse, and recyclables. Our purpose as an organization is to preserve the community’s environment by collecting and managing green waste, trash, and recyclable materials in a professional, safe, and efficient manner through teamwork, education, and high-quality service.

sanitation operators are responsible for collecting discarded waste materials, supporting community clean-up activities, and completing all tasks in accordance with established delivery and collection schedules. They are expected to interact with the public in a courteous and respectful manner. Operators work independently in the field and exercise sound judgment consistent with established policies and procedures.

there are several vacancies in the department of public utilities, solid waste management division. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period for up to a maximum of two years at the city's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.

applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination, however this does not assure a place on the eligibility list.

• possession of a high school diploma or equivalent ged completion; and
• one (1) year of experience in the operation of construction, agricultural, or solid waste collection and related equipment.

• two (2) years of experience operating a commercial vehicle which requires a class b driver’s license. Class a driver's license is also accepted.

possession of a valid class b california driver's license, without airbrake restriction, at time of application and maintain a valid class b california driver's license for the entire term of employment in this classification. Applicants must submit, at the time of application, a current copy of their driving record from the state department of motor vehicles (dmv) issued no later than 30 days prior to submitting of application.

in addition, the ideal candidates will possess strong customer service skills, possess a clean driving record, be safety-minded, and be able to deal with the public in a positive and courteous manner.

the selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a department interview and a department of justice fingerprint prior to employment with the city of fresno.
