Job Overview

As the Chief Technician – Field, you will lead field activities, train junior staff, and manage surveying operations for transportation, energy, land development, oil & gas, and construction projects.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare clear, concise, and accurate field notes and sketches.
  • Collect, process, reduce, and download surveying field data.
  • Maintain surveying gear and company vehicles.
  • Follow FGI Safety Protocols and complete daily Job Safety Assessments (JSA).
  • Understand traffic control operations based on field activities.
  • Communicate with field staff, CAD Technicians, and project managers on a daily basis.
  • Operate, check, and make basic adjustments to robotic total stations, GPS equipment, data collectors, digital levels, metal detectors, tribrachs, and tripods.
  • Research and interpret previous survey evidence, maps, deeds, physical evidence, and other records in relation to field activities.
  • Apply advanced understanding of surveys such as topographic mapping, boundary plats, highway plans, roadway stationing, plan & profile, cross sections, horizontal & vertical curves, construction drawings, as‑built surveys, and pipeline plans.
  • Execute job‑specific quality control metrics as defined in the quality manual.
Qualifications
  • Valid US driver’s license and good driving record.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to operate in a mentor/mentee team atmosphere.
  • Proficiency with GPS systems, robotic total stations, and data collectors.
  • Safety oriented.
  • Advanced understanding of Metes & Bounds or the PLSS.
  • Ability to travel approximately 80% of the time.
Desired Qualifications
  • 6+ years of surveying experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of Trimble surveying instruments and data collectors.
  • Prior safety training (OSHA, First Aid, Confined Space).
  • Surveyor’in’Training (LSI, LSIT, SIT) certification.
  • Experience with AutoCAD C3D and/or Micro Station ORD.
  • Experience with aerial drone and/or 3D laser scanning.
  • Advanced understanding of point‑code driven linework and construction staking.
  • Advanced math skills including trigonometry, geometry, algebra, surveying coordinates, and surveying computations.
Working Conditions &

Physical Requirements
  • Primarily a field position, working outside in varying site conditions.
  • Ability to work in various terrain, weather conditions, and recognize safety hazards.
  • Requires lifting, stooping, bending, stretching, walking, standing, climbing, pushing, pulling, hammering, digging, and other physical activities.
  • Requires the ability to safely operate and drive company vehicles.
  • Requires the ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
