The role

SoFi seeks an energetic, detail‑oriented, self‑motivated, and intellectually curious Independent Risk Management Director to support the development and launch of SoFi’s Big Business Banking (Commercial) products. As part of the Second Line of Defense (2

LOD), you will oversee risk types for all product and feature launches, partner with 1

LOD risk owners, and ensure we identify, monitor, and mitigate risks in line with our framework programs as we scale the business.

What you’ll do
  • Monitor and address risks, issues, and resolution escalation items from commercial activities such as onboarding, servicing, and payments.
  • Oversee the commercial risk management framework and governance for risk‑related initiatives.
  • Provide credible challenge and advisory services on strategic initiatives and ongoing operations.
  • Liaise with Regulatory Affairs on regulator and audit interactions, ensuring successful outcomes through careful planning and monitoring.
  • Collaborate with business units, Enterprise Risk Management, and commercial teams to define the Enterprise Risk Appetite and tolerance; monitor Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) against tolerance thresholds.
  • Apply industry lessons to mitigate concentration risk and liquidity instability, reducing exposure to rapid outflows or contagion events.
  • Assess volatility of commercial deposits and align with liquidity buffers, funding strategies, and asset‑liability management practices; challenge intraday liquidity assumptions for high‑speed payment rails.
  • Challenge processes that evaluate client and partner control environments—especially for onboarding, transaction monitoring, and payment origination—to uncover upstream weaknesses.
  • Identify emerging risk themes and deliver timely root‑cause analysis and remediation.
  • Support post‑launch reviews and continuous control enhancements as the business scales.
What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years of experience in commercial banking risk management.
  • Deep knowledge of commercial banking products, payment operations, KYC/AML, treasury operations, and institutional client risk drivers.
  • Expertise in concentration risk, liquidity risk, and operational/financial crime risks within commercial or high‑velocity payment environments.
  • Ability to independently challenge business growth assumptions and identify latent risks related to scale, client mix, or control gaps.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong leadership, collaboration, influencing, and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Self‑motivated, capable of working independently or within a group under minimal oversight.
  • Intellectually curious and adaptable to change; able to ask questions, test assumptions, and challenge conventional thinking.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, with data‑driven decision making.
  • Experience leading and managing cross‑functional meetings, communicating and driving engagement.
  • Data analysis proficiency preferred for deriving actionable insights.
  • Experience with GRC systems and knowledge of risk management principles.
  • Regulatory compliance and corporate governance standards expertise.
  • Ability to manage multiple initiatives, meet deadlines, and adapt to change.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office products.
  • Team player attitude and experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
