Job Description

This course continues Beginning Musical Theatre Techniques with emphasis on stylistic techniques for musical theatre from the 1960s to the present day. Individual exercises in acting, movement, and voice as related to contemporary musical theatre are explored.

An audition or interview is required for the purpose of assigning solos and group performance roles.

Courses include Beginning Musical Theatre 2 (MW 8:30‑11:00 am) and/or Applied Voice, which is an arranged hours course based on your and your students’ availability. Future classes may include Beginning Movement Techniques for Musical Theatre and Beginning/Intermediate Musical Theatre.

Responsibilities
  • Work in close cooperation with the Musical Theatre Program Coordinator and report to the Department Coordinator of the Theatre Arts Department.
  • Teach courses in:
    • Musical Theatre Performance Technique
    • Auditioning for Musical Theatre
    • Applied Voice
    • Beginning/Intermediate Movement for Musical Theatre
  • Practice and prepare difficult repertoire for performance with ensembles and applied students.
  • Assist students in recital rehearsals.
  • Help prepare students to better perform musically with a piano and/or tracks for public performance.
  • Maintain a friendly, supportive atmosphere for students, staff, faculty, and the public.
  • Primary Purpose

    Duties and responsibilities as presented are intended to be representative and not restrictive. The District reserves the right to modify the assignment and allocation of duties in accordance with operational needs.

    Special Requirements
  • The award of all degrees must be verifiable on a legible transcript. If the degree award date is not posted on transcript your application will be deemed incomplete and removed from consideration.
  • Grade cards will not be accepted in lieu of transcripts.
  • All degrees and coursework used to satisfy the required minimum qualifications must be from accredited postsecondary institutions.
  • Evaluations of foreign degrees and/or coursework are required.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Master’s or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance, or Bachelor’s or BFA in drama/theater arts/performance
    • Masters in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature, or humanities
    • Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area, or the equivalent.
    • Commitment to diversity. All applicants must demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse backgrounds.
    Desirable Qualifications
    • Extensive knowledge of musical theatre repertoire, strong professional development as a director within the industry, knowledge of current trends.
    • Teaching experience in one or more of the instructional areas mentioned in the job description.
    • Comprehensive understanding of stylistic and technical nuances across various eras of musical theatre, including works by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Sondheim, Lloyd Webber, Jason Robert Brown, Lin‑Manuel Miranda.
    • Proficiency in working with diverse vocal styles, complex musical arrangements, and the ability to guide both seasoned performers and students.
    • Directly related professional performance experience is desired.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Expertise in culturally responsive teaching in theater arts, with demonstrated ability to address equity gaps of racially minoritized groups.
    • Experience with LMS (Canvas), collaborating with faculty, staff and community leaders to support underrepresented students.
    Salary Range

    $1,572.67 – $1,725.85 per lecture unit rate, $1,572.67 – $1,725.85 per lab parity unit rate, $1,258.16 – $1,380.60 per lab unit rate
