Are you ready to explore the world of aerospace and defense? Do you want to learn from and collaborate with some of the greatest minds in the industry? At RTX, our internships, co-ops and full-time careers provide an exceptional foundation to work on complex problems, advance your skills and create a safer, more connected world. Discover opportunities to make a difference at RTX.
What You Will DoHelp build software that turns complex sensor data into information people can understand and act on. Our teams develop software for radar and command-and-control systems, with opportunities spanning backend services, data processing, and full-stack web applications. As a Software Engineering Intern, you will work alongside experienced engineers to solve practical problems and contribute to software used in demanding environments. Depending on your assigned project, you may develop a service, build an interactive interface, improve system performance, or automate testing.
- Build useful software:
Design, code, test, integrate, and document new capabilities and improvements to existing applications. - Connect data to decisions:
Contribute to software that processes information, connects services, or presents complex data through web interfaces and visualizations. - Solve a defined engineering challenge:
Translate requirements into an implementation, explore technical tradeoffs, and deliver work with clear scope and expectations. - Collaborate across disciplines:
Work with software and systems engineers to understand how your contributions fit into the larger system. - Learn through feedback:
Participate in design discussions, code reviews, and demonstrations to strengthen your engineering judgment and communication skills. - Develop professional engineering habits:
Use version control, automated testing, debugging, and established development processes to produce reliable, maintainable software.
U.S. citizenship is required.
What You Will LearnModern software tools and practices:
Gain hands-on experience with development tools, automated testing, and workflows used to build reliable software.
How complex systems fit together:
Learn how software architecture connects sensors, backend services, and user interfaces in radar and command-and-control systems.
Engineering tradeoffs:
Understand how teams balance performance, reliability, security, and maintainability—and how those decisions support broader technical strategy.
Emerging technologies:
Explore advances in software development, radar, and command-and-control systems, and evaluate how they could improve your project.
- Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or Advanced degree in an applicable discipline and actively ++enrolled through completion of the internship / co-op session.
- Must have a minimum of 60 hours of credit by the start of the internship / co-op session.
- Experience writing software in at least one language, such as C, C++, Java, Python, or Type Script.
- Experience gained through coursework, research, personal projects, or previous internships qualifies.
We welcome students with different technical interests and backgrounds.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas is helpful:
Software design fundamentals, including object-oriented programming, data structures, and algorithms. - Web application development, including user interfaces, backend services, REST APIs, or databases.
- Systems programming, concurrent programming, networking, or applications that process streaming data.
- Data visualization, statistical or numerical methods, or an interest in sensor and radar applications.
- Development tools and practices such as Git, Linux, automated testing, or continuous integration.
- Projects that demonstrate curiosity, initiative, and the ability to turn an idea into working software.
- Clear communication, effective teamwork, and a willingness to ask questions, learn from feedback, and work through unfamiliar problems.
