Responsibilities
  • Serve as a lead worker of the facility; assign, train, and evaluate staff supervising offenders in housing units, living quarters, and general activities.
  • Participate in periodic counts of offenders; inspect housing units for safety and security violations; check for health and safety hazards; prepare reports; maintain records on offender violations, behaviors, mechanical deficiencies, and security breaches.
  • Interview offenders to obtain information about their residential and family relationships, employment, educational records; contact family members, employers, friends to verify background; collect and verify legal case history and police reports; prepare reports and maintain investigative findings.
  • Retrieve information from the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement System (MULES), Missouri Department of Revenue, and the Department’s computer databases; respond to confirmed active warrants; enter/cancel warrants on escaped and/or absconded offenders.
  • Participate in the classification, treatment, and supervision of offenders; communicate with Parole Officers and administration regarding referrals and supervision strategies; provide after‑hours assistance to departmental staff and the general public.
  • Ensure offenders have parole orders; investigate, monitor, and enter schedule changes for offenders on electronic monitoring; answer and log emergency calls from offenders, family members, and the general public; contact appropriate staff to resolve issues; assist in assigning offenders to institutional and residential programs.
  • Enter appropriate data into the Department’s Booking and Tracking System; assist offenders with job search activities; transport offenders to their designated locations; monitor, control, and document offenders’ consumption of prescription and over‑the‑counter medications; supervise visits; search visitors, offenders, property, living quarters, buildings, and grounds for contraband.
  • Assist Probation and Parole Officers with court hearings and home visits; provide information to staff and law enforcement officials regarding the location and apprehension of escaped and/or absconded offenders; participate in interview panels and make hiring recommendations.
  • Maintain computer databases, chronological shift records, inventory, vehicle logs, troubleshoot equipment problems; order, maintain, and issue supplies.
  • Discuss minor adjustment problems with offenders; refer major problems to the supervisor; promote rehabilitation by modifying offender attitudes, discouraging undesirable behaviors, and encouraging constructive activities; interpret facilities’ rules and regulations to offenders; administer substance abuse assessment devices; collect DNA samples; oversee movement and location of offenders inside and outside the facility; intervene in emergency situations to gain control of offenders or perform CPR exercises.
  • Exercise independence in the performance of duties; receive general administrative direction; work is reviewed by a designated supervisor for conformance with established policies and procedures; perform other related work as assigned.
