S&ME is seeking motivated, full‑time CEI Inspectors at all experience levels to join our Service Line team across South Carolina—including Columbia, Florence, Myrtle Beach, Greenville/Spartanburg, Charleston, Gaffney, Orangeburg, Hardeeville— and nearby regions.

As a CEI Inspector, you'll play a critical role in overseeing contractor activities and ensuring the successful completion of projects. You may make key technical decisions and work independently or as part of a team on projects.

Your Day-to-Day
  • Oversee construction activities—grading, paving, bridge work, and traffic control—to ensure they meet project plans, specifications, and safety standards.
  • Evaluate erosion control measures, confirm environmental compliance, and perform material sampling and quality tests.
  • Prepare detailed daily inspection reports, monitor contractor progress, and maintain documentation needed for payment processing.
  • Complete calculations, track material quantities, and help keep project milestones on schedule.
  • Attend safety and progress meetings, working with contractors, engineers, and project stakeholders to resolve issues and sustain project momentum.
  • Conduct DBE/EEO compliance reviews to verify workforce diversity and equal opportunity requirements are being met.
Compensation

Compensation is based on experience, with additional bonuses for holding relevant certifications.

What You Bring
  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • Highway-related construction or inspection experience, a plus.
  • A technical degree or higher in Civil Engineering Technology or Surveying Technology will equate to 1 year of experience.
  • One or more active SCDOT‑based certifications, a plus.
  • Strong communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language.
  • Good math skills with a basic understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure.
  • An understanding of a fluctuating schedule and an interest in occasional travel.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of company‑provided personal protective equipment, such as:

  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions.
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially long periods.
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40–50 lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment).
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary.
