We are looking for a seasoned project accountant who will support one or more project managers and project teams. The role involves reviewing and evaluating project charges, managing project costs and revenue, maintaining budgets, and preparing comprehensive financial documentation for infrastructure, transportation, and professional services projects.

Job Description

As a project accounting professional, you will provide accounting and financial specialist support to project managers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing and analyzing the collection, recording, and allocation of project costs and revenue to ensure accurate profit and loss calculations and to communicate financial performance to management.
  • Handling lifecycle project accounting from account creation in Oracle, tracking budgets, validating invoicing, and reconciling payables and receivables.
  • Performing detailed accounting tasks related to project contracts, billing events, and revenue for medium‑size and moderate‑complexity projects.
  • Partnering with the Project Manager to establish and update the project budget and to recommend accounting adjustments for contract changes.
  • Generating financial reports and escalating any items requiring review by the Project Manager.
  • Authorizing access to project accounts and transferring expenses in compliance with accounting guidelines.
  • Maintaining quality control standards and procedures to produce accurate financial records using Oracle, spreadsheets, and other software.
  • Applying accounting expertise to investigate variances and submit variance reports.
  • Verifying contract and change order details and interpreting contract language, purchase orders, and subcontract terms.
  • Monitoring key indicators for problematic projects and keeping project managers informed.
  • Ensuring draft invoices are accurate and obtaining necessary approvals before submission to the client.
  • Managing subcontractor invoicing, purchase orders, and payment follow‑up with Accounts Payable.
  • Tracking unpaid contract billings and following up on delinquent accounts or unbilled costs.
  • Responding to client requests for detailed information and approving all project‑related billings.
  • Attending project meetings to report financial status and follow up on action items.
  • Submitting required government reports and compiling information for internal and external audits.
  • Interacting professionally with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients.
  • Staying current on project accounting principles and best practices.
  • Practicing responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
  • Performing additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, or a closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 3 to 5 years of post‑education experience in accounting, project contracts, and change management.
  • Working knowledge of project accounting principles, practices, and methods.
  • Analytical mindset with sound judgment for financial decisions.
  • Proactive coordination with stakeholders around contract and project requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for both accounting and non‑accounting audiences.
  • Self‑leadership, attention to detail, results orientation, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to learn new techniques and work independently while complying with company policies.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, MS Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, etc.), and accounting software.
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to analyze data and reach logical solutions.
  • Awareness of and adherence to WSP USA’s Project Delivery Handbook.
  • Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, and non‑discrimination policies.
  • Work‑hour flexibility as required for a professional role.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
