Job Description:
Overview
Responsible for performing technical and clerical duties within the inpatient pharmacy distribution system. The IV Pharmacy Technician is responsible for sterile compounding using the principles of aseptic technique. Compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) are prepared in compliance with USP 797 utilizing laminar airflow workbenches and biological safety cabinets. Tasks include medication and supply inventory management, medication preparation, medication distribution to patient care units and automated dispensing cabinets, regulatory compliance and other tasks necessary to support safe medication distribution.
Competencies required for Pharmacy Technician Level 1 must be successfully completed within 6 months of start date and at annual evaluations thereafter.
high school diploma or equivalent required.
- One year of hospital or community pharmacy experience
- Experience with aseptic technique, sterile compounding, and USP 797 requirements
- Completion of Military Hospital Core school and/or Field Medical Service school
- One year (24 credit hours) of college level study which must include successful completion of the following subjects:
Algebra, Chemistry, Biology
Demonstrate a knowledge of medications including brand and generic names. Maintain baseline math competency; perform necessary calculations to accurately prepare medication doses. Demonstrate knowledge of and compliance with state and federal pharmacy laws, rules, and regulatory standards. Foster a customer oriented and hospitable work environment. Facilitate communication within and across departments. Demonstrate safety, accuracy, and timeliness when completing work. Demonstrate ability to triage work appropriately.
As a condition of employment within the Pharmacy Services Department of Shands Hospital all employees must be accessible by telephone. This requires each employee to provide and maintain a valid telephone number to the department Staff Assistant, in order for the department to reach them in the event of hospital need and/or emergency.

Licensure/Certification/Registration:
All Pharmacy Technicians must be registered with the Florida Board of Pharmacy as a Registered Pharmacy Technician or licensed Pharmacist Intern prior to their first day of employment.
