Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is about 10 miles south of downtown, and the Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail provides a 16-mile paved route for biking and walking. The University of Florida anchors the city with Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and the Florida Museum of Natural History, while Depot Park and the Cade Museum add local options close to central Gainesville.

Travelers can also reach Ichetucknee Springs State Park in about 45 miles for tubing and paddling, and Jacksonville is roughly 70 miles northeast for Atlantic coast access.
