Technical work in the operation and maintenance of a Water Treatment Plant. Work is performed under general supervision. There are three levels of license in the Water Treatment Plant. Salary offer and bonus would be based on applicant's license and experience.

  • Treatment Plant Operator C – Pay Grade B10 – Starting Salary: $28.83;
    Bonus $3,000.
  • Treatment Plant Operator B – Pay Grade B12 – Starting Salary: $32.78;
    Bonus $3,000.
  • Treatment Plant Operator A – Pay Grade B13 – Starting Salary: $34.44;
    Bonus $5,000.
Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Operate water treatment plant equipment and facilities to supply proper water quantity and quality, and maintain proper pressures and flow.
  • Monitor plant equipment through visual inspection for proper operating parameters and mechanical integrity; maintain a plant log; assist in operation and monitoring of all plant processes including filters, softening, clarifiers, thickeners, vacuum filters, nanofiltration systems, degassifiers, scrubbers, chemical delivery systems for chlorine, lime, polymer, phosphates, fluoride, ferric chloride, sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide and ammonia.
  • Obtain and record field and computer readings of flow, tank and silo levels; ensure delivery of chemicals to appropriate tanks; monitor chemical transfers; receive chemicals for laboratory analysis.
  • Collect samples and assist with laboratory tests/analysis for chlorine, ammonia, pH, fluoride, conductivity, color, turbidity, alkalinity and hardness; operate and adjust pumps, agitators, computers, valves, and other equipment to maintain treatment quality under supervision.
  • Comply with safety regulations and SOPs; comply with federal, state and county regulations for safe drinking water.
  • Read charts/meters/SOPs; maintain accurate logs; perform general maintenance to keep buildings, vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition; work around rotating equipment and hazardous chemicals.
  • Perform skilled and manual tasks in support of plant operations (e.g., cleaning tanks, inspecting containment areas, inspecting pump rooms, exercising eyewash/showers, descaling basins, painting, loading/unloading materials, heavy lifting).
  • Utilize a variety of mechanical tools; conduct periodic inventory of equipment, tools, chemicals, and supplies.
  • Follow safety procedures when handling caustics and acids; maintain MSDS logbook; assist in supervising water plant staff in absence of supervisor; monitor plant operations and test results; assist in developing procedures to meet demand and laboratory tests for water quality.
  • Prepare and perform emergency activities; monitor utility loads, switch to generators as needed; monitor communications; conduct lockup during hurricane conditions; respond to emergencies involving hazardous chemicals.
  • Record readings from plant operations computer, meters, and gauges; maintain test result logs and related data.
  • Prepare, complete or fill out forms, reports, logs, charts, test forms, inspection sheets, checklists, and other documents as directed.
  • Communicate via telephone/radio; provide information and assistance; attend staff/safety meetings and training as appropriate.
