Job Description

Conduct research within the lab, providing technical assistance to ongoing projects, making detailed observations, analyzing, and interpreting results. The specific experiments and techniques utilized by this person will change according to the ongoing discoveries and goals of the research team but may include characterization of behavioral and molecular phenotypes in transgenic mice, tissue collection for DNA, RAN, protein, and histological analysis, including FISH, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence.

High-level organization, maintenance, and breeding of mice (husbandry, setting up mating cages, weaning pups, tail snips, genotyping, and monitoring health concerns) for specific research studies. Coordinate with Animal Care Services staff to troubleshoot issues with mice on a day-to-day basis. Provide training and supervise the work of other scientists, technicians, and lab members.

Develop protocols to improve existing techniques or to incorporate new diagnostic procedures into the design and implementation of new laboratory protocols. Plan and conduct biological research in accordance with stipulated protocols and quality and safety standards. Arrange for the ordering of mice, shipment of mice to collaborators at other institutions, and oversight/maintenance of meticulous records of the mouse colony.

Assist other lab members with the application and assessment of various molecular therapeutic approaches in mouse models, ICV injections, mouse surgeries, and behavioral analysis. Assist in the effective planning and implementation of project timelines and assist in ensuring project milestones are met. Management of data and data analyses. Writing and revising manuscripts.

General laboratory maintenance, including ordering, inventory management, supervising compliance with hazardous waste and biological safety requirements, and routine record keeping.

Responsible for and required to protect laboratory (and UF) intellectual property. This includes maintaining confidential data accurately and safely in accordance with laboratory notebook SOPs and UF IP policy.

Expected Salary

$80,000 to $85,000 annually and is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications

Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field and eight years of experience in the field or in a related area; or master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and eleven years of experience in the field or in a related area; or bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and thirteen years of experience in the field or in a related area.

Preferred

Highly knowledgeable with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures. Analyzes existing methodologies, formulates hypotheses, modifies existing procedures, and develops novel procedures for biological and/or other supporting scientific disciplines.

This position requires an efficient, highly motivated, and resourceful Biological Scientist to contribute to an active research program within Dr. Ranum’s research laboratory.

This position requires hands-on technical expertise in molecular biology, cell culture, handling and dissection of mice, and immunohistology.

Must be a self-starter, independent thinker, and proactive problem solver with excellent follow-through; must accept a high level of accountability and responsibility; must demonstrate exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills.
