Job SummaryUtilizes the nursing process to provide direct patient care and consultation for people with fecal and urinary diversions, wounds, drains, pressure sores, and incontinence. Includes acute care, rehabilitation, patient teaching, and counseling. This position will care for patients in the neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups. Employee performs clinical duties in accordance with population specific guidelines and adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as outlined in policy and procedures.
Assists in the advancement of the professional practice environment by communicating the NGHS nursing strategic direction and focusing on activities that support the nursing strategic direction. Provides nursing involvement support for VOICE and the nursing quality teams including coaching team members in their professional participation.
- Licensure or other certifications: Current RN license or temporary permit in Georgia.
- Educational Requirements: Degree in Nursing.

Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated aptitude for, and interest in, Enterostomal Therapy
- The ability to teach, to communicate, and to work effectively with others
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, direct, and evaluate activities related to patient care
- Performs complex assessment of patients' physical and emotional needs and strengths. Performs and documents assessments and recommendations regarding the nursing care of patients. Assesses the learning needs of patients, families, and staff. Functions as a clinical resource for patient assessment on nursing unit(s) as needed. Guides and instructs nursing staff in the development of diagnoses. Performs and collaborates with nursing staff in assessment of psychosocial needs of patient and family.
- Plans nursing care for Enterostomal Therapy patients and families. Develops or assists nursing staff in the development of nursing care plans for patients. Performs and assists nursing staff with review and appropriate update of Nursing Care Plans to reflect: nursing diagnosis, long- and short-term goals, nursing intervention, discharge plan, psychosocial aspects, patient and family involvement. Evaluates nursing care plans of referred patients.
Serves as a resource in discharge planning for patients and documents appropriately. - Performs and assists others with organization and implementation of therapeutic care for Enterostomal Therapy Patients. Provides direct care to patients requiring complex care as needed. Demonstrates clinical expertise by assisting other nursing staff with difficult or unusual procedures.
- Evaluates effectiveness of Enterostomal Therapy care given by self and others. Evaluates the appropriateness of the patient's response to nursing treatment and recommends continuation or modification of prescribed plan of care. Contacts patients and families who require follow‑up care. Prioritizes nursing interventions in complex and rapidly changing patient situations as evidenced by the patient outcome and documents in the patient record.
- Serves as a resource and supports community agencies as related to Enterostomal Therapy.
- Identifies and provides for learning needs of patients, families, and health care professionals related to Enterostomal Therapy. Directs and participates in teaching patients with specific learning needs. Develops teaching protocols and/or discharge plan of care for patients. Provides impromptu instruction and demonstration of techniques, products, and procedures to unit staff.
- Keeps coordinator informed in a timely manner of any unusual concerns, situations, conditions, relative to staff, patients, families, or physicians.
- Supports and/or participates in at least one nursing research study per year as requesting by the Nurse Researcher.
- Successfully completes mentoring class. Assists with mentoring of Registered Nurses when other mentor resources have been assigned. May mentor more as desired.
