Job DescriptionPosition Overview: The Class A Lineman is a skilled position in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical overhead distribution systems. This position works at various locations and may also be required to travel to another state depending on customer demands.
Essential Functions- Works safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized overhead work.
- Capable of leading crew members in the absence of the Foreman.
- Strings overhead wire.
- Sets poles and anchors.
- Installs transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches and switch gear.
- Troubleshoots trouble in primary and secondary systems.
- Replaces cutout fuses and clears faulted circuits and systems.
- Frequently works with energized high‑voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
- Maintains company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
- Performs rigorous physical labor.
- Identifies primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
- Familiar with induced voltage.
- Understands grounding procedures.
- Works at heights and/or confined spaces.
- Properly installs and removes PPE and cover‑up.
- Climbs different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.) and possesses necessary tools.
- Uses phasing sticks to phase out a line.
- Plans safe work based on a job print or work order.
- Obtains a one‑shot on a recloser.
- Conducts a pre‑job or tailgate briefing.
- Safely performs a reconductoring job.
- Gloves and works on live high‑voltage distribution power lines.
- Installs and removes mechanical jumpers.
- Uses a load‑bus tool.
- Performs all other related work as required to complete the job.
- Works outside, frequently in inclement weather.
- 5‑year minimum of recent field experience.
- Can read and communicate effectively in English.
- Obtains a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment.
- Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.
- Able to travel long distances on short notice when required.
- Can work for extended periods in various locations when required.
- Can lift in excess of 50 lbs.
- Can properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
- Willing to work overtime when requested.
- Willing to work outside the normal work schedule, including weekends, holidays, and overtime.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, stand, walk, use hands to fingers, handle, feel, and reach with hands and arms.
Work EnvironmentThe employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
