The Office of Inspector General (OIG) is an independent law‑enforcement agency dedicated to maintaining the safety and security of the Texas juvenile justice system. OIG inspectors general investigate criminal allegations involving TJJD juveniles, employees, facilities, contractors, volunteers, or programs within the Texas juvenile justice system. They serve as commissioned peace officers with authority under the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, overseeing investigations, imposing security measures, and ensuring compliance with the TJJD Use of Force Plan.
EssentialDuties
- Oversee and conduct criminal and administrative investigations into allegations of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and other misconduct; interview witnesses, collect and evaluate evidence, and prepare detailed reports.
- Obtain, execute, and manage warrants; assist other law‑enforcement agencies; conduct undercover investigations; perform arrests and facility security duties, including escapee pursuit.
- Prepare comprehensive investigative reports for prosecution and administrative discipline, and submit findings to agency leadership.
- Maintain accurate records of cases, evidence, contraband, and property in compliance with applicable laws and retention policies.
- Conduct routine, random, or requested searches and inspections of facility premises, persons, and vehicles.
- Coordinate with departmental staff to share investigative information, identify operational concerns, and recommend improvements.
- Collect and analyze data on serious injuries, escapes, youth‑on‑youth assaults, and attempted suicide; issue non‑compliance reports and technical assistance as needed.
- Perform related duties such as computer forensic investigations, safety hazard reporting, and training of personnel.
- Maintain a regular attendance schedule and meet agency leave policies; be prepared to work overtime, on call, and respond to emergency events within 60 minutes.
- Travel extensively throughout the state as required for investigative and operational duties.
- Valid Texas Peace Officer license or equivalent law‑enforcement experience.
- Minimum 2‑year experience in investigation or law‑enforcement roles, with a strong understanding of criminal procedure.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct investigations, gather evidence, and prepare professional reports.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a high‑pressure environment.
- Physical fitness to conduct patrols, investigations, and possible physical confrontations.
