Job Summary
Provides direct and indirect patient care in the medical-surgical setting. Communicates with physicians, supervisor, and co-workers as appropriate about changes in patients’ clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, is able to perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision.

Summary of Essential Job Functions- Perform head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy, including pediatric, adolescent, geriatric, and general patient populations.
- Adequately assess and reassess pain, utilize appropriate pain‑management techniques, and educate patients and families.
- Revise plan of care as indicated by patients’ response to treatment and evaluate overall effectiveness.
- Perform waived testing (point‑of‑care testing, glucometers) per Clinical Laboratory and resident care unit policies and procedures.
- Interpret results of waived tests and take appropriate action.
- Consider patients’ needs based on age and standard of care.
- Know medications and their correct administration based on age and clinical condition.
- Follow the six medication rights and reduce potential medication errors.
- Formulate a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluate effectiveness; include family as appropriate.
- Assist physicians with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills.
- Perform treatments and provide services to the level of licensure.
- Apply knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan and provide age‑appropriate care.
- Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces likelihood of errors, supporting a culture of quality and safety.
- Consultation with other departments as appropriate for an interdisciplinary approach to patient needs.
- Communicate appropriately and clearly to nurse director/supervisor, co‑workers, and physicians.
- Identify and address psychosocial needs of patients and families; communicate with Social Services regarding in‑hospital and post‑discharge needs.
- Maintain documentation to meet current standards and policies.
- Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly.
- Coordinate and supervise patient care as necessary.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
- Basic computer skills.
- High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Current RN license in Texas.
- Current BLS certification.
- ACLS certification within the first 90 days.
- NIHSS certification within the first 90 days.
- PALS certification preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional languages are a plus.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs alone and 150 lbs with assistance; stand and walk 75 % of shift on hard surfaces; sit, bend, stoop, and reach above one’s head; work in a temperature‑controlled indoor environment.
