Registered Nurse – Emergency Department Nights
Full‑Time Nights, 7pm–7am
Job SummaryProvides professional nursing care within the Emergency Department; coordinates care planning with other disciplines. Meets the psychosocial, physical, and general aspects of care, determines priorities based on patient needs, and communicates with ED physicians regarding changes in patient status and results of diagnostic studies. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment.
Essential Job Functions- Perform head‑to‑toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy (neonate, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric, and general patients).
- Use triage process to ensure timely and appropriate care; accurately assign triage categories.
- Assess and reassess pain, utilize appropriate pain‑management techniques, and educate patients and families.
- Monitor hemodynamic status and correctly interpret results.
- Demonstrate knowledge of cardiac monitoring; identify dysrhythmias and treat appropriately.
- Perform waived testing (point‑of‑care testing, glucometers, fecal occult blood) per policies and procedures.
- Maintain current knowledge of medications and correct administration based on age and clinical condition.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes safety and reduces errors.
- Treat patients and families with respect and dignity; address psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and spiritual needs.
- Demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development over the lifespan and provide age‑appropriate care.
- Interact professionally with patients, families, and staff; involve families in care planning.
- Ensure adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment; assist in cost containment.
- Cooperate with team to achieve departmental objectives.
- Respond promptly to workload changes, adjusting assignments as necessary; perform related duties as assigned.
- Provide resource information to other staff; assist physicians with procedures.
- Orient new employees to the Emergency Department.
- Participate in problem‑solving with the healthcare team related to clinical care area management.
- Participate in performance improvement activities and continuous quality improvement (CQI).
- Maintain good rapport and cooperative relationships with physicians, ancillary staff, and unit staff.
- Complete in‑services and return on time; attend annual review and department in‑services as scheduled.
- Attend at least 80% of staff meetings annually; read and return missed monthly staff meeting minutes.
- Represent the organization positively and professionally.
- Actively participate in CQI activities, comply with organizational policies on ethical business practices, and communicate mission, ethics, and goals of the department.
- Basic computer skills.
- Current Registered Nurse in the State of Texas.
- Current BLS Certification.
- ACLS Certification within 90 days.
- PALS Certification within 90 days.
- TNCC Certification within first 6 months of hire.
- NIHSS Certification within one year of hire.
- CEN Certification preferred.
- Preferred two years of critical care or emergency nurse experience.
- Specialty certification preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Additional languages a plus.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs alone and 150 lbs with assistance; may assist with patients or equipment up to 500 lbs.
- Ability to push, pull, lift, bend, kneel, twist, and reach above shoulder level.
- Must be able to sit, stoop, bend, and reach above head.
