The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) is a fun, experiential atmosphere that is centered on excellent programming, customer service, and community. We strive for excellence in the workplace within an environment that fosters creativity and learning. DPR is seeking a part-time Children's Leader for the Gro Preschool at James S. Long Park who is a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to teach children’s preschool programs for children ages 3–5 and summer camps for children ages 3-8.
Our state-licensed Nature Preschool prides itself on providing a quality program that emphasizes learning through nature and play in a safe, and nurturing environment. The Gro Preschool staff provides thoughtfully planned experiences and opportunities, which stimulates learning in all developmental areas: social, emotional, physical, and cognitive. Gro Preschool is a Natural Education space, incorporating both indoor and outdoor classrooms. The outdoor classroom will have a variety of stations for preschoolers to explore music, movement, gardening, and the natural world around them.
It also provides an environment for children to explore, collaborate, be inquisitive, and promotes a lifelong connection and appreciation for nature. The Gro Preschool staff will lead and teach preschoolers during the school year (September-May) and children in our nature-based summer camps (June-August).
This program is licensed by the Department of Education, therefore, the Children’s Leader is partially responsible for ensuring compliance with the regulations pertaining to the Department of Social Services and best practices of early childhood education. The Children's Leader is responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of the children they are assigned to.
About This RoleThe Children’s Leader will be responsible for…
- Delivering well-planned, high-quality preschool programs and summer camps. Programs are planned and implemented through collaboration with the Children Leaders and Recreation Supervisor, review of current registration and surveys to better understand the needs of the programs.
- Ensures quality guest interactions. Parents, students, and staff are treated respectfully and timely. They feel their concerns have been heard and addressed fairly.
- Establish policies within the class to ensure safety and security of staff and patrons. Monitor patron and staff injury and accident logs and follow up on how we can fix the issue.
- Ensures all staff receive training on safety protocols and policies and procedures for SBDCRC building, playgrounds, and outdoor spaces. Monitor to ensure all are being followed and documented.
- Responsible for maintaining compliance with all state licensing requirements.
- Starting Pay: $16.66/hr
- A minimum of 6 months experience working with preschool or school aged children in a recreation program or classroom.
- Knowledge of VA Department of Education (DOE) licensing standards.
- Experience delivering excellent customer service.
- Experience utilizing computer and relevant software applications, including but not limited to Microsoft Word and Excel
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Must be able to make decisions based on best practices for the program.
- Excellent communication skills.
Primary hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30am - 12:30pm. The schedule may vary depending upon class offerings. This is a year-round program with the Preschool school year being September - May and the Summer Camps being June - August.
Special RequirementsApplicants must be at least 18 years old and meet the hiring qualifications outlined by the Department of Social Services for Child Care.
Minimum Education , Training and Experience RequirementsHigh school Diploma / G.E.D. and 0-12 months of related experience (State mandates require a high school diploma or G.E.D for specific licensed program positions).
