Overview
Join the Planning Engineer role EC is a locally owned electric distribution system serving the Northern Virginia area, focused on safe, reliable electricity and quality products at competitive prices.
Location:
Gainesville, Virginia. The selected candidate will be eligible to work a hybrid schedule after an on-site introductory period. Relocation assistance is available. NOVEC is unable to provide work authorization or sponsorship for this position.
- Perform prudent planning, engineering, operational and economical studies to design, construct, and safely operate the electrical system; develop reliable and cost-effective solutions.
- Develop technical standards, specifications, guidelines, and business processes for use by other departments; act as a resource for technical advice.
- Assist in planning, organizing, and controlling department activities to analyze and propose system improvements and new facilities; independently identify and develop solutions with minimal direction.
- Prepare and issue well-justified recommendations for the annual capital budget to meet compliance, capacity, or reliability requirements.
- Utilize engineering analysis software tools, models, and databases to identify projects and support justification.
- Develop Short Range and Long Range plans for the electrical system, including substations, transmission and distribution construction, and improvement projects.
- Independently design electrical layouts and interconnections for data centers, large commercial customers, and new subdivisions; determine protection requirements and coordinate studies to optimize performance.
- Review construction work orders for adherence to plans, NOVEC policies, guidelines, and procedures; determine over-current and over-voltage protection needs.
- Facilitate planning activities with management, principal engineers, developers, and government agencies to align load growth with system improvements.
- Review outage data to identify trends and develop programs to address significant outage causes; ensure accuracy of GIS and CYME models for internal use.
- Provide guidance to less experienced engineers and deliver technical expertise and daily team leadership.
- Interpret industry standards and regulations and support regulatory compliance efforts; follow safety rules and HR policies and procedures.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with industry practices and standards.
- Three (3) years of related experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.
- NCEES EIT certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
- Electric utility experience is preferred; substation experience is a plus.
- The role is placed at Engineer II, III, or IV based on education, experience, certifications, and licensure.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-task team; strong communication across organizational levels.
- Knowledge of company policies, procedures, and applicable laws; proficiency with Microsoft Office and engineering tools.
- Understanding of Power Engineering, Planning concepts, and utility practices; experience with capital and operating budgets.
- Ability to learn electrical distribution, transmission, and substation facilities design and specifications; analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
- Experience reviewing and interpreting maps, plans, drawings, data, and field information; project management capability.
