Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities, collaborates with the general education teacher, monitors and evaluates student outcomes, and assists in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEP). The role includes attending school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement.

Teachers in special education schools or discrete service models must complete specific courses provided by MCPS, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions.

Job Specific Information

MCEA 10 Month:
The wage range for this position is a salary between $64,591 and $131,472 based on education & experience. For information about benefits, please follow this link.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusive classroom practices.
  • Monitor and evaluate outcomes for students with disabilities.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
  • Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as required.
  • Support behavioral interventions for students, including nonviolent crisis intervention.
  • Complete required behavioral management courses and ongoing professional development.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
  • Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at a level appropriate to the assignment (elementary or secondary).
  • Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
  • Certification in a content area is desirable.
  • Knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum, special education program, IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments.
  • Ability to provide instructional support, work well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians of students with disabilities, appropriately adapt instructional programs and materials, and communicate effectively.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of MCPS curriculum, special education program, IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments, methods of teaching elementary math if seeking an elementary position. Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015), Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 2004), and state and federal policies and procedures related to special education. Ability to provide instructional support.

Works well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians of students with disabilities. Ability to appropriately adapt instructional programs and materials. Excellent communication skills. Knowledge of and the ability to apply the six performance standards established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
