General DescriptionThis position is part of the NIST Professional Research Experience (PREP) program, focusing on photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The postdoctoral researcher will develop optimized photonic test structures for PIC process flows, working with NIST staff and collaborators to extract physical parameters like absorption, scattering loss, and refractive index dispersion across platforms such as silicon-in-insulator, silicon nitride, and lithium niobate.
Key Responsibilities- Review existing test structure designs and methodologies for PIC parameter extraction.
- Set up electromagnetic simulation models for PIC platforms.
- Optimize test structure designs for robust photonic parameter determination.
- Produce layouts and collaborate on fabrication and measurement.
- Present results internally and externally, including at conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.
- Archive results, protocols, and software for organizational use.
- PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Applied Physics, or related field.
- Over 3 years of experience with Lumerical and Comsol electromagnetic simulation tools.
- Experience in device design and layout for photonics foundries.
- Over 2 years of experience with photonic device characterization, including linear spectroscopy.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as Matlab, C, and Python.
- Strong communication skills.
