Job Title:

Biobank Histopathology Scientist

Location:

Gaithersburg, MD

Duration: 6 Months (Contract)

Working Hours:

Monday to Friday, between 9 AM – 5 PM

    The onsite interview will involve a practical assessment — candidates must demonstrate proficiency in operating Leica Microtome and Leica Stainer equipment, as well as hands‑on skills in sectioning and staining of human biological samples.
Position Overview

The Biobank Histopathology Scientist will support Biobank operations by providing high‑quality histopathology and microtomy services for Human Biological Samples (HBS). These samples are vital to clinical research, contributing to the discovery, development, and validation of novel therapeutics and diagnostics.

This position plays a key role in maintaining histological excellence, sample integrity, and compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and global HBS standards. The role involves both laboratory‑based responsibilities and collaboration with scientific, logistics, and data management stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine histology techniques, including microtomy, cryosectioning, and staining (H&E, special stains, immunohistochemistry).
  • Operate and maintain Leica Microtome and Leica Stainer equipment to ensure consistent sectioning and staining quality.
  • Conduct slide scanning and digital image analysis when required.
  • Ensure sample traceability throughout the workflow, from receipt to processing and archiving.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve histological technical issues; elevate complex issues when necessary.
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness and equipment upkeep, following COSHH and SHE (Safety, Health, and Environmental) guidelines.
  • Receive, log, store, track, and dispatch HBS according to GCP and SOPs.
  • Manage incoming and outgoing shipments and liaise with external couriers for sample transport.
  • Enter and update sample data in Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and databases.
  • Maintain accurate electronic and physical archives of slides, FFPE blocks, images, and associated raw data.
  • Ensure data integrity and readiness for internal/external audits.
  • Adhere to UK Human Tissue Act standards and institutional ethical requirements.
  • Perform all activities in compliance with GCP, SOPs, and HBS governance policies.
  • Contribute to risk assessments, audit preparation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor and document laboratory equipment maintenance, calibrations, and cleaning records.
  • Communicate effectively with internal Biobank teams, researchers, and global stakeholders.
  • Respond promptly to HBS user queries and provide technical guidance.
  • Support training and onboarding for new staff in histopathology and microtomy procedures.
  • Partner with scientific teams to ensure laboratory outputs align with study and operational needs.
Required Education, Skills, and Experience Education

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (BSc/MSc) in a scientific discipline such as Biology, Histology, Biomedical Science, or Life Sciences.

Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of hands‑on histotechnology/histopathology experience in a research or clinical setting.
  • Microtomy, staining (manual and automated), and cryosectioning.
  • Histological evaluation and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Human Biological Samples (HBS).
  • Proficient in LIMS and data management systems.
  • Understanding of UK Human Tissue Act and related compliance frameworks.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and sample integrity.
  • Fluent in English with excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to perform repetitive laboratory tasks with precision and consistency.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in Biobanking operations.
  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory workflows and project‑based environments.
  • Experience leading or supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Familiarity with sample logistics, temperature‑controlled storage, and audit procedures.
Additional Information

Occasional weekend or after‑hours work may be required.

Adherence to site Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) standards and laboratory safety regulations is mandatory.

Strong emphasis on teamwork, accountability, and maintaining the highest ethical standards for handling human biological materials.
