Essential Functions
  • Receives general direction from the Special Education Director or designee. May exercise technical and functional supervision over supervisory, professional, technical and clerical staff.
  • Plans curriculum and prepares lessons and other materials, considering factors such as individual needs, abilities, teaming levels, and limitations of students, to meet the goals and objectives of the IEP.
  • Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team consisting of administrators, school personnel, students and families; implement the educational plans as developed by appropriate specialists; serve as an advocate for students.
  • Determine parents’ ability to comprehend and apply therapeutic and behavior modification techniques and consider parents’ social and emotional needs to formulate teaching plans.
  • Instruct students and develop individual teaching plans covering self-help, motor, social, cognitive, and language skills, for parents to implement in the home. Revise teaching plans as needed.
  • Counsel parents to provide social and emotional support and refer to social service agencies for additional services and financial assistance.
  • Maintain confidential individual records for referrals and continuation of service in compliance with Federal, State and District regulations and policies.
  • Maintain professional skills through consultations, in-service activities, and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Maintain awareness and respect for the cultural diversity of students and families; assist staff in understanding these variations when planning for students and families.
  • Deliver educational services to children who are homebound due to health limitations or distance from school.
  • Travel daily from site to site, and from home to home as required.
  • Instruct students and teachers in various forms of communication such as sign language, finger spelling and speed cues; encourage verbal communication and classroom participation.
  • Understand and apply principles of early childhood development and exceptional learning; knowledge of local/state educational structure and organization; cultural diversity and Native American beliefs of students and families.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement corrective educational plans; interact effectively with educational professionals in the District.
  • Utilize formal assessment instruments and techniques for evaluation and remediation of learning disorders; interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws and regulations.
  • Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing. Maintain appropriate records with confidentiality.
  • Understand and respect cultural diversities and Native American beliefs and practices of students and families.
  • Uphold safety and physical requirements of the job; wear personal protective equipment as supplied by the District.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Knowledge of: Principles and practices of early childhood development and exceptional learning; local/state educational structure and organization; cultural diversity concepts; educational foundations of a school district; state and federal legislation and district policies regarding identification, evaluation and placement of children with disabilities;
    Native American beliefs of students and families.
  • Ability to: Plan, coordinate, and implement corrective educational plans; use formal assessment instruments and techniques; understand statistics and evaluation; maintain confidential records; interpret and apply laws and policies; communicate clearly in writing and orally.
  • Experience:

    One year of related work experience in a school setting is desirable.
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Licensure & Certificates: BA degree and ability to obtain NM teaching license.
