Pharmacist, Healthcare

Summary

Serves as a clinical pharmacist providing direct pharmaceutical care for patients within the Indian Health Service. This position is a major source of pharmaceutical clinical information and is expected to manage selected patients with chronic disease states and provide care for acute patients.

Responsibilities

• Proper interpretation and dispensing of prescribed products, including review of labeling for directions and precautions.
• Provide specialized services to assist patients with managing conditions such as diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure and other chronic illnesses.
• Provide information and advice about drug therapy, interactions, side effects, dosage and proper medication storage.
• Maintain records such as pharmacy files, patient records, inventories and control records for narcotics or controlled drugs.
• Compound and dispense medications as prescribed, calculating, weighing, measuring and mixing ingredients.
• Serve as a pharmacy consultant and advisor to committees such as the therapeutic agents committee, the hospital research committee, and the infection control committee.

Requirements

Conditions of employment include U.S. citizenship, selective service registration for eligible males, a probationary period, and compliance with federal background investigation and E‑Verify. Candidates must obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges and be subject to on‑call hours or standby duty.

Qualifications

To qualify, resume must state sufficient experience and/or education to perform duties. Experience includes paid, unpaid, volunteer or part‑time work with clear duties, responsibilities and hours per week.

Basic Requirements for Pharmacists

• Degree: A doctoral degree in Pharmacy recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or equivalent.
• Licensure:
  Passed the NAPLEX and MPJE and licensed to practice pharmacy in a U.S. State, D.C., Puerto Rico or U.S. territory.
• Medical:
  Ability to distinguish basic colors.
• Experience:
  
  Demonstrate knowledge, skills, abilities and competencies necessary to perform pharmacy work. Qualifying experience may include dispensing medications, evaluating medication use patterns, performing administrative or consultative work, planning medication programs, establishing medication handling procedures, researching medical literature and maintaining medication records.

Basic Requirements for the GS‑11 (or equivalent) Grade Level

Candidates must have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D., Pharm.

D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

Basic Requirements for the GS‑12 (or equivalent) Grade Level

In addition to GS‑11 requirements, resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑11 grade level in Federal service involving establishment of outpatient pharmacy clinics, patient history gathering, medication regimen evaluation and monitoring patient outcomes.
