Academic Professional Track (Non‑Tenure):
Associate Professor of the Practice or Professor of the Practice and Department Head
Position at Texas A&M University in the Department of Maritime Transportation, College of Marine Sciences & Maritime Studies, Texas A&M University at Galveston Campus. The role is full‑time with an 11‑month academic appointment starting Fall 2026. Applicants may be considered for the faculty title of Professor of the Practice and Department Head; exceptional candidates at the rank of Associate Professor of the Practice may also be considered.
The appointment as Department Head is initially a five‑year term, with the possibility of an additional term.
The Department of Maritime Transportation seeks an experienced and visionary department head with demonstrated academic leadership and scholarship in marine transportation. The incumbent will serve as the chief academic, fiscal development, and administrative officer for the department, contributing to the mission of teaching with a teaching assignment of one course per semester.
The department’s mission is to provide students with a solid academic foundation for leadership careers in the maritime sector. Graduates earn a Bachelor of Science degree and qualify to take the U.S. Coast Guard license examination for licensing as a Third Mate for any gross tonnage on oceans, steam, or motor vessels. Cadets also receive fundamentals in business topics related to the maritime industry, ashore and at sea.
Responsibilities• Lead and strategically develop the department’s vision and curriculum in maritime transportation.
• Foster a climate where all members can thrive, supporting shared governance practices.
• Manage academic, fiscal, and administrative functions of the department.
• Preserve current curriculum, updating it in line with national and international laws, rules, and regulations.
• Represent the department in internal and external stakeholder engagements.
- Master’s degree.
- Currently holds a USCG Merchant Mariner Credential as an unlimited deck officer of Master.
- Certified in Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) required for deck officers of the above rank.
- Leadership experience in an administrative position in the field of maritime transportation.
- Exceptional communication, management, and logistics skills.
- Administrative and budget management experience.
- Knowledge of the subject matter covered in Marine Transportation courses and familiarity with marine industry terminology.
- Knowledge of the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD), Memorandum of Agreement with SMAs, the USCG/Maritime Academy Standard Operating Procedures, and relevant Code of Federal Regulations and IMO STCW standards.
- Doctorate degree.
- Maritime academy graduate.
- Minimum of 365 days of sailing experience on a blue‑water trade vessel at the level of USCG Merchant Mariner Credential as an unlimited deck officer of Master.
- Minimum of ten years of teaching experience for a full professor of the practice and five years of teaching experience for an associate professor of the practice. Candidates with less teaching experience but greater sailing experience as a master will also be considered.
