Building Automation Specialist – Galveston National Lab (GNL) – BSL4 Maintenance
Job Summary:
Provides highly skilled technical work involving electronic, electrical, mechanical and pneumatic control of state‑of‑the‑art building automation systems in a laboratory setting.
- Performs detailed inspections of operating equipment, personnel activities, and plant facilities.
- Troubleshoots system problems, following procedures and reading system blueprints.
- Supervises compliance with standards of workmanship and safety.
- Interfaces with maintenance staff regarding system issues and maintains documentation.
- Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs controls and equipment.
- Reads, draws, and interprets electrical, pneumatic, mechanical, and HVAC schematics, one‑line diagrams, and control sequences.
- Programs microprocessors for initial commissioning, tuning control loops, and calibration of analog inputs.
- Performs functions on live circuits and in operating control enclosures.
- Provides expertise to instrumentation technicians with knowledge of Siemens, Johnson, and TAC control systems.
- Assists in training other technicians.
- Maintains and repairs Continuous Emissions Monitoring (CEM) equipment for stack emissions testing.
- Acts as a Utilities Operations Technician when needed during emergencies.
- Associate degree in electronics, instrumentation, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Four years of related experience.
- Clearance from the Department of Justice within six months of hire required; failure to pass may lead to termination.
- Five years of experience in design, installation, and implementation of building automation control systems.
- Operational knowledge of pressure‑independent and dependent laboratory facilities and associated control systems.
- Knowledge of emergency power, automatic transfer switches, and main switch gear.
- Knowledge of instrumentation and automation sensor calibrations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
Mechanical, electrical, and/or office environments. May be exposed to occupational hazards such as mechanical and electrical equipment.
ScheduleMonday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, and as needed on occasion.
