JOB SUMMARYThis is a challenging position for a highly energetic individual with above average customer service skills who must be able to address the concerns and or perspectives of a diverse community. The mission of the Adelphi University Department of Public Safety and Transportation is to enhance the quality of life for the entire Adelphi community by maintaining a secure and open environment where the safety of all is balanced with the rights of the individual.
This Department strives to accomplish its mission while adhering to its core values of Pride, Professionalism, and Service to the University Community. The department is looking for coverage on the weekends, evenings and on-call as needed.
In compliance with New York’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly rate for this position is $22 per hour.
REPORTS TOCaptain of Operations, Emergency Management & Training
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIESMaintains a safe and secure campus environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors as well as University buildings, facilities, and grounds by regularly patrolling assigned areas.
Observes for unauthorized personnel or activities, enforcing University rules, regulations and policies, and reporting violations to the appropriate authority.
Checking doors and locks for proper operation, securing and locking buildings and windows as directed, rendering assistance, and responding to emergency situations as appropriate.
Reduces the potential for injury, loss of life, property theft, and/or destruction of property by conducting visual surveys while conducting area checks and patrols potentially dangerous or unsafe areas, buildings, and conditions.
Enforces University parking and traffic regulations by being knowledgeable of the parking and traffic regulations, advising faculty, students, staff, and visitors about the parking rules and regulations, issuing parking tickets.
Assists in responding to weather, fire, medical, and security emergencies.
The ability to react quickly and appropriately to emergencies and threatening situations, make accurate observations and remember details of situations and individuals, and correctly interpret and apply policies, laws, rules, ordinances, and regulations to individual circumstances is required.
The ability to learn to operate the department emergency vehicles, develop knowledge of campus buildings and geography, and work effectively as a team member and individual is required.
The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Excellent communication and report writing skills are required.
General computer knowledge is required.
Willing to work weekends and all tours of duty.
Willing to work fixed posts for long periods of time (indoor/outdoor).
Willing to report to work on short notice.
Must be able to attend the University 6 weeks initial training.
Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather.
Five years of prior Security Officer experience is required.
Prior University Public Safety and/or law enforcement experience is preferred.
Pre-employment physical including drug testing for new officers will occur.
Security Guard License required.
Valid driver’s license required.
CPR/AED Certificate required.
N.I.M.S and NARCAN certifications are preferred.
Friday and Saturday, 11pm to 7am.
Saturday and Sunday, 3pm to 11pm.
