Overview

Under general direction cleans, flushes, deodorizes and unplugs blocked sewer and storm drains. Assists in street repair, painting, and maintenance and other duties as needed or required.

Representative Duties

Cleans and unplugs sewer and storm drains using hydro-dynamic pump.
Flushes, removes debris, and deodorizes storm drains.
Flushes and maintains pump station.
Assists other City crews in mixing paint, painting signs, curbs, and crosswalks.
Does related tasks as assigned such as general sign construction, painting, and maintenance work.

Examples of Duties

Maintains clean sewer line systems and storm drain facilities using a variety of cleaning equipment used by the City; cleans, repairs and/or replaces pumps and valves at sewer lift pumping stations; cleans clogged sewer lines and storm drains; cleans and repairs catch basins; locates broken sewer line and storm drain pipes; excavates and shores trenches; repairs, replaces or installs new sewer line pipes and storm drain pipes and operates all associated equipment;

works with various crew members at the job site; uses specialized sewer safety equipment including breathing devices, gas detectors and harnesses; properly places traffic barricades, cones and delineators to ensure safety in traffic situations; operates large trucks and construction equipment and tows equipment to and from work site; uses jackhammers, cement mixers and other equipment in raising or lowering manholes to grade levels;

answers routine questions from the general public at job sites explaining reasons for clogged drains; refers public complaints to supervision for resolution; maintains inspection and activity records; interprets blueprints for locating sewer lines; responds to various sewer and other maintenance emergencies and is subject to call-out during non-working hours.

Education and Experience

Graduation from high school and two (2) years experience in the maintenance of sewers, storm drains, general street maintenance and construction work. Additional experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

License

Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License with tanker endorsement at the time of appointment.

Please submit the required license, certificate, or registration with the State as evidence of professional or technical proficiency at the same time of filing the application. The Human Resources Officer will require necessary verification of qualifications as specified in the job bulletin.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

Knowledge of methods, equipment and tools used in cleaning and repairing sewer lines, storm drains and pump stations; work safety procedures and practices in sewer maintenance repair; pumps, valves and other related mechanical equipment used in sewer lift pumping stations. Ability to instruct, monitor and work with a small crew; follow work safety procedures and practices; maintain a high level of skill in the operation of trucks, power equipment and tools used in the maintenance and repair of sewers and storm drains;

lift manhole covers; enter, descend, ascend and exit manholes; follow oral and/or written instructions; communicate effectively orally and in writing; read and understand sewer blueprints; complete basic work activity records and time reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Regularly exposed to noisy, wet conditions, odors and vibration. Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color and peripheral vision and depth perception. Performs heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time (i.e. must frequently lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds); regularly works in outside weather conditions as well as in confined spaces;

drives vehicles with standard and automatic transmissions.

Testing Process
  • Minimumm Qualification Screening - Pass/Fail
  • Practical Exam - 50% of total score
  • Oral Interview - 50% of total score
