This is a Department Head level position, under general supervision of the Board of Health, working collaboratively with the Executive Department, and in accordance with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts statutes and City Ordinances. The Director of Public Health is responsible for providing professional, administrative, technical and inspection work in planning and managing the municipal public health programs, disease control programs, promotion of sanitary conditions, protection of the environment from damage and pollution and in enforcing public health laws;

operates the City’s solid waste operations.

• Responsible for the enforcement of the state sanitary code and environment code and the supervision of the enforcement staff; includes the issuance of over 200 licenses and the enforcement of numerous state and local laws, codes and ordinances.
• Provides supervision of curbside trash and recycling, including billing and financial issues, complaint resolution, delivery, removal of receptacles and all associated federal, state and local reporting.
• Responsible for the operation of the City Transfer Station, maintenance of a closed municipal landfill and environmental protection facilities and all associated federal, state and local reporting.
• Responsible for communicable disease control, surveillance and reporting; planning and operation of the annual city influenza vaccination clinics, including vaccine accountability and reporting.
• Conducts emergency response planning for biohazards and other threats.
• Responsible assisting with the rabies control program.
• Provides health education and promotion activities including participation in local and regional wellness initiatives, substance abuse initiatives and other activities.
• Serves as clerk of the Board of Health as needed.
