Job DescriptionReports to: Transportation Supervisor
Nature & Scope: The Bus Driver works independently following standardized routines under general supervision. The work requires strict adherence to policies, procedures, and regulations. The incumbent interfaces and problem‑solves with students, school administrative staff, transportation colleagues, teachers, and non‑licensed school staff. Because this job involves frequent interaction with students, the position requires a high level of professional decorum, calm, and ability to act as a role model to young people.
The incumbent does not have supervisory responsibilities, but may provide guidance and assistance to regular or temporary employees as required.
- Conduct oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest traditions of public education and in support of the District’s mission.
- Safely operate District school buses for the purpose of transporting students over scheduled routes to and from school and to and from District sponsored events and activities. Operate in accordance with District procedures and in compliance with all State of Oregon traffic laws and regulations regarding the operation of a school bus.
- Appropriately and safely operate all devices associated with operating and inspecting a school bus, including but not limited to electronic inspection devices; first aid kits; bodily fluid kits; fire extinguishers; emergency triangles; tire irons; car seats; safety vests; wheelchairs and wheelchair securements; wheelchair lifts; oxygen tanks; backpacks; securement straps; seatbelts; and two‑way radios.
- Maintain and enforce student order on the school bus. Follow established procedures regarding student management.
- Regulate heating and ventilating equipment provided on bus for the comfort of passengers.
- Instruct, supervise, and assist students and other passengers in safely crossing roadways and the safe entry and exiting of the bus during regular and emergency situations. Twice each year instruct students and other riders on safe bus riding and bus evacuations as required by law.
- Perform designated pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections of the assigned school bus in accordance with District procedures and laws of the State of Oregon. Undertake inclement weather procedures as necessary, including chaining the bus when necessary.
- Immediately report any identified mechanical or operational defects in the assigned school bus in compliance with State regulations.
- Report all incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations in compliance with District procedures.
- Clean interiors and windshields of school buses for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance and sanitation of the vehicle in accordance with District procedures.
- Prepare all required reports, forms or other documents and maintain accurate records.
- Maintain confidentiality, with specific understanding of the privacy rights of students.
- Effectively communicate with students and parents to create an orderly and safe experience for student riders.
- Maintain effective working relationships with other members of the transportation staff, school personnel, students, and parents. Effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and staff from diverse cultures or backgrounds including those who speak limited or no English.
