Position Summary:The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.
The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer II position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.
This position will assist in providing engineering support to multiple roles in the Distribution Control Center (DCC), such as DCC Engineers, Operators, Grid Techs, etc. The position supports communications across several internal departments in addition to external customers. This individual must have a solid understanding of electrical principles, ability to work with others in a workgroup setting, and the desire to serve our communities with excellence.
Once trained, this engineer will be responsible for independent analysis of complex plans for system operations with voltage levels typically 34.5KV and below. As these individual meets expectations and develops within the role, they will have the upward potential for progression promotions and the opportunity to work on functional teams to provide insight to projects that impact the Transmission and Distribution systems.
- Serve as engineering support for Distribution system operations. Primary responsibilities in DCC include completion of clearances and switching requests, as well as ensuring collaboration with Grid Techs and Optimization Engineers to safely operate the Distribution system.
- Primary projects include effective utilization of DCC applications, timely seasonal load transfers, and continued focus on service restoration. Writing planned switching orders for all work at or above the feeder level on the Distribution system. Leading regularly scheduled meetings such as Grid Engineer meetings, Transmission Work Management meetings (to determine off-load scenarios to support substation equipment maintenance and capital projects), etc.
- Provide technical support to management, other DCC personnel and internal and external customers within area of responsibility. This includes but is not limited to Power Quality Reliability & Integrity (PQR&I), Capacity Planning, Energy Control Center (ECC), Transmission, etc.
- Develop outage restoration switching orders to restore power after a fault.
- Assist in fault location when requested by DCC Operators or field partners.
- Review and approve substation equipment clearance requests from Transmission partners for devices such as breakers, regulators, capacitor banks, etc.
- Analyze feeder/sub data provided by various technologies (e.g. DMS, FMS, Yukon, Distribution Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (DSCADA), etc.) to identify trends, abnormal operating characteristics, and develop corrective actions.
- Provide engineering support during storm response and restoration.
- Must be available for on-call rotation (upon successful completion of training). On-call support is compensated.
- Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of well-defined problems in area of expertise.
