The Department of Child Services helps children who are victims of abuse or neglect and strengthens families through family support and preservation services. DCS pursues permanency for children and families through reunification, guardianship, and adoption. DCS services also encompass foster care, child support, and transitional support for those adjusting to adulthood.

Role Overview

The Child Services Assistant supports the clerical and administrative needs of the office. You will assist with organizing case files, ensuring documentation is properly retained, and supporting staff in connecting clients to resources. This role requires a high level of collaboration and confidentiality.

Location

Gary, Indiana and surrounding counties as needed.

Salary

Starts at an annual salary of $31,668 and may be commensurate with education and job experience.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a variety of files, update case files as new material is collected, and ensure that information is kept organized and that all necessary case documentation is retained in compliance with the record retention policy.
  • Prepare reports involving tabulations and balancing of posted data and simple arithmetic calculations.
  • Answer inquiries over the telephone or in person concerning regulations or procedures within the specialized area.
  • Receive and prepare replies to routine correspondence.
  • Operate office machines related to the specific area of work.
Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of administrative work specific procedures.
  • Working knowledge of DCS procedures involved in gathering and compiling statistical data or information and preparing standardized reports.
  • Ability to be tactful in dealing with persons over the telephone and in person.
  • Ability to make clerical decisions regarding appropriate procedures within a specific program area.
  • Working knowledge of computer software systems and data entry procedures.
  • Ability to make simple arithmetic computations.
  • Ability to maintain confidential records.
  • Working knowledge of legal policies and procedures pertaining to the field of DCS child welfare.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
