Position: RADIOLOGY EXTERN III

Overview

RADIOLOGY EXTERN III role at Methodist Hospitals. Under direct supervision of a registered/licensed professional or designated preceptor, perform work involving direct patient care in radiology and/or cardiology. Provide support to the department to extend high quality care to patients. Observe and perform proficient exams/scans/procedures in which a competency has been established and in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Interacts with patients, physicians and co-workers in accordance with the Methodist Mode of Care and Conduct.
  • Participates in planning and arranging work as a team member, providing care often under stressful conditions with a cross-functional team of nurses, technologists, and physicians.
  • Obtain pertinent patient history and provide education to patients and family on exams, scans or procedures when required.
  • Assist the physician or technologist/staff in room preparations for scanning and special procedures.
  • Observe and perform proficient tests, scans or procedures (in which a competency has been established) under supervision; complete needed forms on patients for approval by the supervising professional.
  • Operate all specialized equipment and utilize necessary technique and accessories to produce optimal quality under the direction of a preceptor.
  • Implement safety procedures when working with equipment; practice sterile technique when required and assist physicians with procedures alongside the preceptor.
  • Transport or aid in transporting patients to/from designated locations and prepare them for exams, scans or procedures.
  • Follow procedures for post-processing of images under direction of the preceptor and assist the technologist in acquiring STAT readings when needed.
  • Learn to process a patient through the hospital and radiology information system, and utilize the PACS system properly under the preceptor's direction, if applicable.
  • Keep the assigned work area clean and stocked; check rooms and ensure they are ready for the day; report low supplies to the preceptor or Team Leaders; support room turnover between procedures.
  • Answer department phone and aid department in patient, nurse, and physician communications.
  • Perform other duties as needed and/or assigned.
  • Set up sterile trays and prep patients for diagnostic procedures using sterile technique under the direction of an R.T.
  • Maintain a clean, well-stocked, and safe working environment; check and test equipment prior to use.
  • Follow universal precautions and help ensure compliance by other employees and physicians.
  • Operate radiographic equipment used for angiographic imaging and apply appropriate technique to produce optimal image quality.
  • Follow post-processing procedures for images.
  • Implement radiation safety procedures when working with radiation-producing equipment under the direction of an R.T./R.N.
Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of radiology treatment modes and related equipment. Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate in a pleasant, professional manner. Maintains discretion, integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism. Uses logical problem solving within hospital policies and procedures. Able to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced environment; demonstrates flexibility in meeting unanticipated demands. Must be able to work flexible shifts and respond appropriately in emergency situations.

Education

All post-high school education must be from a recognized college or university. Other majors or courses of study may be considered if closely related to the essential functions of the position. Additional education or experience may substitute requirements if not conflicting with state or Board certification/license requirements.

Degree/Diploma/Program

Must be in final year of program or, for a one-year program, must have completed one clinical rotation.

Experience

Other types of work experience will be considered if closely related to the essential functions of the position.

Certifications and Licensures

CPR – Basic Life Support Required. Indiana Radiology Student License Required for externs working in an area with radiation. This does not apply for ultrasound externs.
