Civil Engineer I, II
Performs intermediate professional work involving the planning, design, construction and inspection of a variety of public works and utilities projects; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned supervisor.
Civil Engineer III
Performs difficult professional and administrative work involving the planning, design, construction and inspection of complex public works and utilities projects; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general direction of the assigned supervisor. Supervision is exercised over a group of subordinate professional and technical personnel.
The following job functions are typical for a position of this nature. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each function satisfactorily. Other job functions and duties may be required as assigned. Percentages for each function are subject to fluctuations.
- Plans designs & coordinates the construction of major public works projects, coordinate inter and intra-governmental activities, oversees bids, agreements and related matters with private contractors and other officials; (35%)
- Plans, supervises and participates in the review of subdivision, site, and construction plans, plats and specifications for codes compliance, municipal standards and policies, and sound engineering principles; (20%)
- Plans, supervises and reviews the work of technical personnel engaged in the preparation of designs, drawings, estimates, specifications, construction contracts, payments to contractors and related engineering work; (20%)
- Provides developers, contractors, and the general public with technical information relating to engineering projects; (5%)
- Coordinates work of consulting engineers, other municipal departments and governmental agencies with that of the Engineering Division; (5%)
- Supervises the preparation of the property maps and legal descriptions for the acquisition of and disposal of property; (5%)
- Coordinates with survey party chiefs in the collection of engineering data necessary for the planning, design, and construction of a variety of public works and utilities projects; (5%)
- Prepares technical reports. (5%)
General knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering as related to the preparation of plans and specifications in the area assigned; basic knowledge of modern utility projects; ability to perform difficult engineering computations on engineering problems and planning; ability to establish effective working relationships with City officials, employees, contractors, and the general public; skill in the use of civil engineering instruments and equipment;
ability to communicate complete ideas effectively, orally, and in writing; ability to calculate detailed cost reports. Assignments are usually broad in scope with opportunity for some independent professional judgment.
Civil Engineer II
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering as related to the preparation of plans and specifications in the area assigned; basic knowledge of modern utility projects; ability to perform difficult engineering computations on engineering problems and planning; ability to establish effective working relationships with City officials, employees, contractors, and the general public; skill in the use of civil engineering instruments and equipment;
ability to communicate complete ideas effectively, orally and in writing; ability to calculate detailed cost reports. Assignments are usually broad in scope with opportunity for some independent professional judgment.
