Line Technician I
- Performs installation, maintenance, and repair work on low and high-voltage lines; operates line trucks and bucket trucks; loads wire, transformers, poles, etc. (60%).
- Assists with emergencies; may work extended hours in emergency situations (10%).
- Replaces broken and burned-out street light bulbs; ability to climb poles (10%).
- Reads and resets meters (10%).
- Cuts on and cuts off electric service at the pole; follows up broken meter seal reports; makes service connections to residences and businesses (5%).
- Trims trees as necessary for the performance of other duties (5%).
- Performs installation, maintenance, and repair work on low and high voltage lines; operates a line truck; loads wire, transformers, climbs poles, etc.; installs transformers and wires up secondaries; installs, repairs, and replaces cross arms, leg supports, cables, insulators, and lightning arrestors; performs required line work on energized and de-energized circuits; installs, maintains, and removes meters; installs and repairs street and yard lights;
and replaces defective poles (55%). - Makes new service connections to residences and business establishments by installing transformers and secondary wires from pole to point of service (10%).
- Checks voltage and phase rotation; installs voltage and current transformers; maintains equipment used in power line work (10%).
- Trims trees as necessary; responds to after-hour problems; serves as a service troubleshooter (5%).
- Operates underground digging machines, locators, and test equipment; maintains and installs underground services; assists with emergencies; responds to after-hours problems (5%).
- Participates in the after-hours on-call roster as required; overtime may include weekends and holidays; participates in tail-gate meetings and safety meetings (5%).
- Cuts on and cuts off electric service at pole (5%).
- Climbs poles, operates bucket and line trucks; frames poles, installs hardware, fuses, transformers, pulls wires; ties in conductors and changes insulators; performs electrical "hotline" work as required; familiar with hot line tools and equipment (35%).
- Installs and removes cross arms, cutouts, lighting arresters, primary and secondary lines; prepares for and follows up after jobs; maintains street and rental lights; maintains transformer card data (30%).
- Responds to after-hour problems; serves as electric service troubleshooter; participates in on-call roster; overtime may apply; ensures vehicle and tool readiness (10%).
- Ability to take clearances and occasionally perform switching at unattended substations; performs switching and sectionalizing of circuits (5%).
- Installs single-phase and multi-phase underground and overhead services; maintains and repairs substation equipment as required (5%).
- Cuts on and cuts off services at the pole; checks voltage and rotation; wires transformer-rated meters; diagnoses field problems (5%).
- Responds with sound judgment to unusual and hazardous circumstances and restores service; maintains underground services and equipment (5%).
- Participates in pre- and post-job tail-gate meetings and safety meetings (5%).
Qualifications, Requirements, and Benefits
Line Technician I – Minimally qualified candidates starting pay: $31,0486. Requirements include basic knowledge of electric line construction, maintenance, and service; willingness to learn to set poles, string wire, and perform related work; ability to perform manual labor; follow oral directions; observe safety rules; withstand adverse weather; basic knowledge of service connections and distribution system location; graduation from high school or equivalent.
Physical Demands/Work Environment: ability to push/pull/lift up to 50 lbs; work outdoors in all seasons; operate manual construction equipment. Special Requirements: complete NIMS IS-100, 200, and 700 training within twelve months; obtain Class B Commercial Driver’s License within six months of hire.
