Position: ELECTRICIAN I, II, III

Electrician I — Electrician II — Electrician III

Performs technical work in the maintenance, repair and trouble-shooting of electrical and electronic components for City facilities; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over a small crew.

Electrician I, Electrician II, and Electrician III share common responsibilities:

  • Trouble-shoot electrical components
  • Repair and replace outdated electrical components
  • Install new electrical circuits
  • Discuss job requirements with and receive instructions from supervisor
  • Inspect for National Electrical Code violations
  • Develop work assignments based upon priorities
  • Requisition necessary equipment and materials
  • Maintain time and materials records
  • Train and instruct unskilled and semi-skilled workers
  • Serve on the emergency on-call rotation

Educational and experience requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate s degree in electronic technology, or related field and moderate experience in the maintenance of automated electrical or electronic control systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special requirements

  • Electrician I — NIMS 100, 200, and 700 training certificates within 12 months of hire; possession of a Journeyman Electrical License; the employee must pull permits in his/her name or the license must be signed over to the City of Gastonia.
  • Electrician II, III — NIMS 100, 200, and 700 training certificates within 12 months of hire; possession of a limited North Carolina Electric license upon hire; the employee must pull permits in his/her name or the license must be signed over to the City of Gastonia.
  • Electrician I, II & III — Valid North Carolina driver s license.

Physical Demands (Electrician I, II & III)

2. The physical requirements include the following:

  • Medium to heavy work: exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions

3. Visual requirements — Visual acuity to perform mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature, including color, depth perception and field of vision.

4. Working conditions

  • Inside and outside environmental conditions; noise levels requiring elevation of voice
  • Hazards: proximity to moving parts, electrical current, working at heights, exposure to heat or chemicals
  • Atmospheric conditions: fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation
  • Os a position in narrow spaces or confined areas
